JAMES L. WATERBURY, OF
MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
No. 904,240. Specification of Application filed July 13,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, James L. l/VATERBURY, of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating and Ventilating Appliances, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to devices designed for use in connection with ventilating systems and the object of the invention is to provide means for regulating the entrance of smoke and products-of combustion into a fine, and directing the cold air in the flue past the discharge opening of the smoke pipe into the flue.
Other objects of the .invention will appear from the following detailed description.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l, is a detailed sectional view of a fine with my in vention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detailed view of the apparatus removed from the flue, looking at one side. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same.
In the drawing, 2 represents a flue having a cold air entrance at the base, not shown, as usual in fines of this kind.
3 is an opening in the wall of the flue and 4 a metallic frame or thimble fitting therein.
5 is a sheet metal box fitting within the thimble at and having flanges 6 contacting therewith. A stove pipe section 7 projects through the front wall 8 of the box 5 through which section the products of combustion from the heater, not shown, are admitted to the flue. The side walls 9 of the box 5 project into the flue preferably and a valve 10 is hinged at 11 at the lower end of the box, and has wings 12 triangular in form that are adapted to slide back and forth on the side walls of the box 5 and form a continuation thereof when the valve is pushed into the flue. This valve may be adjusted to nearly close the passage into the flue at the top of the box 5 or may be swung into the flue to allow theproducts of combustion to pass freely thereto. WVhen the valve is tilted into the flue as indicated in Fig. 1, it will stand in a diagonal position with respect to the passage and deflect the cold air passing upwardly and prevent it from flowing across the exit of the smoke flue and acting as a Letters Patent.
1908. Serial No. 443,295.
I blanket or damper to prevent the free discharge of the products of combustion. The valve may be swung inwardly until its upper edge is past the center of the line when a narrow throat or passage will be formed between said edge and the opposite wall of the flue, thus restricting the passage of the cold air while forming an exit for the products of combustion that is equal in area substantially to the cross sectional area of the smokepipe. Manifeslly the size of this exit opening may be regulated by the adjustment of the valve and this adjustment I prefer to accomplish by means of a rod 13 attached at one end to one of the wings 12 and projecting through the front wall of the box and having a pivotal connection with an op erating chain 14 that is movable over pul leys 15 supported between a strap 16 and the wall of the pipe 7. By the movement of this chain the rod 13 is pulled forward or backward and the desired adjustment of the valve obtained. To provide for the escape of creosote which will collect in the flue, and on the valve 10, I provide a series of holes 17 in said valve preferably near its hinge 11 through which the creosote running down the surface of the valve 10 may drop into the flue beneath. I also prefer to provide a thimble 18 below the smoke pipe section communicating with the lower portion of the box 5, and having a removable cap 19, which when withdrawn, will allow access to the interior of the box for the purpose of cleaning the same and removing ashes or soot which may have accumulated therein.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination, with a vertical flue, of a box fitting within an opening in the wall thereof and having an exit opening into said flue, said box having an opening for a smoke pipe section in its front wall, and through which the products of combustion are dis charged into the upper portion of said box, and a valve hinged at its lower end to the lower rear edge of said box, said valve being adapted to close the exit opening from said box into said fine or swing into said fine and partially close the vertical passage therethrough below the smoke exit from the box, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a vertical fine, of a box fitting in the wall thereof and having an opening in its front wall for connection with a smoke pipe section, and said front wall having a thimble below said opening Patented Nov. 17, 1908.
and a removable cap therefor and a valve hinged to the lower wall of said box below the smoke pipe opening and adapted to swing inwardly and partially close the vertical passage in said flue below the smoke exit from the box, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a vertical flue having an opening in its wall, of a box fitting therein and having an exit opening into said flue and an opening in its front wall for connection with a smoke pipe attachment, a valve hinged to the lower wall of said box below the smoke pipe opening and adapted to swing inwardly into said flue, said valve having side wings arranged to form continuations of the side walls of said box and the passage of said exit opening between the upper edge of said valve and the upper wall of the box, being,.when the valve is open, substantially equal in area to the cross sectional area of said smoke pipe section, substantially as described.
4;. The combination, with a vertical flue, of a box fitting within an opening in the wall thereof, and having an exit opening into said fiue, and an opening for a smoke pipe section in its front wall through which the products of combustion may be discharged from a smoke pipe into said box, and a valve hinged at its lower end to said box and adapted to close the smoke exit opening from said box into said fine or to swing into said flue and partially close the vertical passage therethrough below the smoke exit, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with a vertical fine, of a box fitting in the wall thereof and having an opening in its front wall for connection with a smoke pipe section, and a movable valve connected to said box and adapted to regulate the exit of smoke from said box into said flue and the passage of a gaseous current through said flue.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 7th day of July 1908.
JAMES L. W ATERBURY.
