PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17', 1908.
Application led August 23, 1906. Serial No. 331,797.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Il. Snanrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of h'iuseogee and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
Hy invention relates to imlrn'ovements in pumps, particularly upon the pump embraced in Letters Patent- #5Sl,936, issued May '-1, 1897. Its object, among other things, is to facilitate the pumping action; to provide for the ventilation of the well; and to carry out these ends in a simple, economic and effective manner.
Said invention consists therefore of certain structural features or instrumentalities substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the type of pump above noted, disclosing the application of said invention thereto. Fig. Q is a side elevatienof the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section produced through line af-ae of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section produced upon the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
In the disclosure of my invention, or improvements, employing` the type of pump above referred to, I provide the pump-barrel of stock 1, near its extreme upper end, with a vent-cock 2 for relieving the internal resistance, which would otherwise result from air-compression, as well understood, during the pumping operation or action, therefore providing for lessening or reducing the effort of pumping as is apparent. Of course, it is appreciated that the cock 2 should be opened at this time by its suitable manipulation.
The spout 3 has a screw-thread formed upon its discharging end for the ready application or attachment of a hose thereto, when such may be desired.
A base l of preferably cast metal, is applied to the pump stock l, at its lower end in practically like manner as connection is effected between said stock and the form of base employed in said patent, i. c. by screwthreaded sleeve connection 5. Said basemember il, however, as herein provided, is in the form of an npraised casting or housing mostly circular in its general outline as seen in Figs. 2 and a, having lateral slits or openings a therethrough whereby is formed a chamber above the plane of the ground-surface, around the well-opening, to provide for air-circulation at this point, consequently for the ventilation of the well, the colder surface-air descending and displacing the warmer or other air in the well, coming to the surface and being accordingly reduced in temperature, as will be readily appreciated, thus providing for preserving the well-water in its pure initial state. Said housing or base has in continuation of itself an elongation or extension G to provide a substantial support for, and means to which may be secured the lower end of the pumpstock brace 7.
The operative mechanism for the plungerrod may be of the form shown which is practically that disclosed by said patent or of other approved type as none of the same constitutes any part of these improvements.
I claim- 1. A pump comprising a base member forming a housing over a well, the upper surface of the base portion being closed and the sides thereof having openings therein for the passage of air.
2. A pump comprising a base portion forming a housing which has screw-threaded engagement with the pump stock, the upper surface of the base being closed and the side walls having openings therein for the passage of air.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence 0f two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH E. SHAB-PE.
IVitnesses R. E. Fanisir, Jr., I-IownLL HOLLIS.
