UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES R. OUDE, OF RICHLAND SPRINGS, TEXAS.
GOVERNOR-CYLINDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES It. CUDn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richland Springs, in the county of San Saba and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governor- Cylinders, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention has for its object an improved construction of governor for regulating the speed of engines or motors in general, and the invention consists of an improved construction of cylinder adapted to impose a certain amount of work upon the engine by the latter pumping air into the cylinder, the said cylinder being vented at varying'` predetermined pressures, all as will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, with parts in section, of my improved governor cylinder; F ig.` 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the air cylinder; and, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same with a portion of the pumping apparatus.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the cylinder' provided at each end with a double head 2 that is preferably bolted thereon.
3 designates a pump cylinder which is provided with a middle partition 3b dividing it into two chambers and which is provided at one end and in each chamber with an outlet port in registry with a corresponding port leadinginto the main cylinder 1, so as to supply 'the latter with compressed air. The pump cylinder 3 is formed at one end with a flange 3C by which it is secured to the cylinder 1 at the middle thereof.
4 designates a gage pipe which is secured to the main cylinder 1 and which is provided with a T-shaped end 5 of which one arm carries the gage 6 and of which the other arm carries a vane-capped whistle 7. 7 designates a valve in such arm of the T- shaped end of the pipe 4., so that the air to the whistle may be controlled or shut olf, as desired.

acting pistons 8 and 9, to each of which a pair of rods 10 and l1, respectively, are connected, said rods extending outwardly through stuifiug boxes in the heads 2 of the cylinder, as clearly illustrated in the drawings. Coiled expansion springs 12 encircle the respective rods 10 and 11, and exert a tension to press the two pistons S and 9 towards each other and towards the middle of the cylinder.
The cylinder 1 is provided with vent-cocks 13, which, in the present instance, are shown as arranged in two series, five in each series. The cocks of one series are designated A, B, C, D and E, and the other A, B', C,`D, and E. Each one of these vent-cocks is provided with a valve intended to be turned by hand to open and close the cock.
In the two compartments of the pump cylinder 3, plungcrs 1.4L and 15 work, and these plungcrs are connected to preferably hollow plunger rods 1G that extend out through stulliug boxes in one end of the cylinder 3 and that are operatively connected to the cross heads 17. Said cross heads are in turn connected to eccentrically actuated pitmen 18, said pitmen being driven by the engine to which the governor mechanism is attached. The plungers 111 and 15 work alternately, as shown.
In the practical operation of my improved cylindergovernor, the load imposed upon the engine to which the cylinder is applied so as to govern the speed thereof, may be regulated by means of the various cocks. For instance, if it be desired that the engine run under a very light load, the vent-cocks A, A are opened. Hence, as the engine operates, it will pump air into the cylinder 1 between the two pistons 8 and 9 and will consequently move the two pistons apart and outwardly away from each other against the action of the coiled springs 19,; but, as soon as the pistons shall have passed the vent-cocks A, A', it is manifest that the air will vent itself and the engine will not be called upon to work up to any higher pressure. The varying pressures desired may be readily determined by means of the gage G, as is evident. Again, if desired, the cocks A, A B, B; C, C; and D, D may all be kept closed and the cocks E, E opened. Under these conditions, it is manifest that a much higher pressure of air will be reached within the cylinder 1 and the engine will have to pump air into the cylinder 1 until the pressure is sufficient; to move the pistons S and 9 away from each other a distance to or beyond the outermost Vent- I cocks E, E. As the air is vented, it is obi vious that the coiled springs will exert their tension to move the pistons 8 and 9 towards each other, and it is to be understood that the tension of these springs is resisted at all times by the pressure of the air between the pistons. By this means, the speed of the engine may be regulated and the pistons caused to be held by the air pressure at about the planes of the corresponding vent-cocks, according as these different vent cocks are opened or closed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A governor Cylinder of the character described, comprising a body portion, double heads secured to the ends of the body portion each of which is provided with two stuffing boxes, the body portion of the cylinder being formed with an inlet port, and on opposite sides thereofl with a series of vent cocks, two pistons mounted in said cylinder on opposite sides of said inlet ports, two piston rods connected to each piston, the piston rods projecting outwardly through the stufhng boxes, and expansion springs coiled around the piston rods and bearing against the pistons and the heads.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
