SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 655,685, dated August 14, 1900. Application filed October 23, 1899. Serial No. 734,429- (No model.)

Be it known that I, FRANKLIN G. BURLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cylinders for Double and Compound Steam-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
In this invention the effect'of two cylinders is produced by a single cylinder divided longitudinally and vertically into equal halves, said halves being separated by a partition which closes each half. The pistons are constructed with wedges for packing adapted to the changed conditions and to the shape of the half-cylinders.
The invention is primarily intended for double engines; but it is equally applicable to compound engines.
The nature of the invention is fully described in detail below and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan View of my improved cylinder as adapted for a double steam-engine. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, showing one of the pistons in plan. Fig. 3 is a cross vertical section taken on line X, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross vertical section illustrating my improved cylinder as adapted for a compound engine.

In Figs. 1, 2, and 3, A A represent two complete or full halves of a cylinder, such as would be produced by dividing a cylinder longitudinally and vertically into two equal parts. These two parts A are separated by a partition B,which is placed between them, forcing them a short distance apart. The parts A and partition B are secured together by bolts 0 through flanges A. D D represent pistons, and E piston-rods, extending through suitable packing in the head or end a, which is preferably'a single integral plate extending across both cylinders or half-cylinders.
' The plate a at the opposite end may be similarly constructed. The pistons conform in shape to the half-cylinders, and each is provided with wedges F for packing, extending from the interior of the piston out oppositely against the flat and concave inner surfaces of the cylinder. Each wedge is secured to a plate or bar F, the two bars being held apart by suitable springs Hon rods I, extending from one plate through suitable openings in the other. Thus the wedges are held normally against the opposite sides of the cylin= der for packing purposes. H H are the valveboxes, H the steam-inlets thereto, I I the valve-rods, J J the steam-inlets to the divided cylinder, and K K the exhaust-ports, all constructed as usual. Thus a double cylinder is provided in substantially the space which would be occupied by a single cylinder, and economy of space and material is produced without impairing the efficiency of the engine.
In Fig. 4, L L represent the two parts of the divided cylinder separated by the partition M, such cylinder being intended for a compound steam-engine. N represents the steam-chest on the high-pressure side, and N the steam-chest on the low-pressure side. P P are the ordinary D-valves. R is the steaminlet on the high-pressure side, and S is the pipe which takes the steam from the exhaust in the steam-chestNon the high-pressure side to the steam-chest N on the low-pressure side. The arrangementof the steam-chests, valves, and pipe L is not new in this invention, but is illustrated as applied to the divided cylinder.
' Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In asteam engine, adouble cylinder comprising a pair of cylinders, each consisting of a half-cylinder such as would be produced by dividing a cylinder longitudinally and vertically into two parts; a partition separating the two said cylinders or part cylinders; means for securing the open sides of the two said cylinders to the partition on the opposite sides thereof; steam-chests; distributionvalves and exhaust and inlet ports, substantially as described.
2. In a steam-engine, a pair of semicylim drical cylinders; a dividing plate or partition, said semicylindrioal cylinders having their open sides facing and secured to opposite sides of said dividing-plate; steam-chests; distributing-valves; and exhaust and inlet ports, substantially as set forth.
