Tie-it known that I, FREDERICK E. MEE- narna' citizen of the United States. residing at'Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in ImpressioirLatches for Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in printing presses of the type known as platen or. embossing presses.
My inventlon more particularly relates the apparatus for operating the impression iatches for locking the adjuster-bar by which through the medium of eccentrics, the pressure exerted by the platen; may be regulated.
The press is originally built with a handle for operating the platen, and the apparatus for operating the latches is applied as an attachment. As the latter apparatus is pro \"idcd with a handle the original handle built with the press must be removed and discarded.
The object of my invention is to construct the levers forming part of the said attach ment for operating the latches so that the original handle may be utilized andreadily attached to the said levers, thereby greatly reducing the cost of the construction of the attachment for operating the latch. levers.

The platen is operated by a connecting rod 3 pivoted on a crank 4 on the shaft 5 which is driven b gear-wheels 6 and 7 The connecting r0 3 is .also pivotally connected to a shaft 8 mounted in the platen 2. The aforesaid parts are duplicated upon the opposite side of the press and the said. arm 12 is connected with the corresponding arm 'on the opposite side of the press by an adjusterbar 13.
Upon the platen 2 is a rack 14, into the teeth of which rack fits a projecting lug 15 on the adjuster-plate 16, which latter n'iay be setf nd bolted in any desired position upon the rack 14. The said adjuster-plate 16 is provided with a recess 17 into which fits the end of a latch-bolt 18, mounted in bearings. 19 and 20 on the adjuster-bar 13, thus hold ing the adjuster-bar'and the shaft 8 in a fixed position. By withdrawing the latch bolts the adjuster-bar- 13 and the shaft 8 may be adjusted.
The latclrimlt, as shown in'Fig. 4. is provideclwith a spring 22 to depress the same and hold it in engagement with the adjuster plate 16. To withdraw the latch-bolt, a lever 24 is rovided, which latter has the latchbolt 18 pivoted therein at the point 25. The lever 2 rests upon the top of the bearing 19 on the adjuster-bar and when the lever 24 is turned in either direction the lever will bear against the bearing 19 as a fulcrum and raise the latch-bolt 18 against the action-0i the spring 22. The latch-bolts are duplicated and are located at either side of the press. The levers 24 are connected by a handle 30 so that both 1atch-bolts may be raised simultanaously by the operation of the said han- The lever 24 is provided with a boss 26 which is formed at right angles with the lower rtion of the lever. The said boss is provi ed with a screw-threaded aperture 27 so that the handle 30 ma be secured to the boss26 bygthe bolt 31. T 1e lower portion of the lever is bifurcated to receive the end of the latch-bolt 18 which is pivotally 'connected to the lever by the pin 28."
The handle 30 is made as shown in Figs. and 3 and may readily be attached to the levers 24 when the latter are constructed in the manner above, described. The handle is originally made with the press and used to move the platen. It will readily seen that by m improved lever the handle can be utilized y attaching it to the latch operating device thus saving the labor and expense of making a handle especially for the latch op -erating attachment.
Having thus described my invention I 'claim and desire to secure by Letters Pet- =.an adjusting shaft, arms on said shaft and an adjuster bar extending between said arms, the combination of bearings on said adjuster-bar, a latch-bolt in each of said bearings, a spring on said etch-bolt, alever pivoted to said la'vclrbolt, said lever having a boss formed thereon at right-angles to-the lower portion of said lever, a screw-threaded aperture formed in said boss, a handle extending between said bearings, said handle having apertures formed in the ends of the, same and bolts adapted to pass through the' In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 2b in presence of two witnesses.
