citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have -invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which. it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to oil burners, and more particularly to a device of that class for burning crude oil. I
It is the object of my invention to provide a burner, by means of which crude oil may be burned without forming a carbon deposit on the burner parts or in the pipes, and by the use of which a substantially perfect combustion and a high heating efliciency may be secured.
To accomplish theobjects noted I provide a burner mechanism which is adapted to simultaneously receive a flow of oil and water, which will vaporize these liquids at a common point to form a combustible fuel body, and from which the burning fuel is delivered under both an up and a down draft, in order to thoroughly agitate the fuel particles and thereby secure the desired combustion.
In order that my invention may be thoroughly understood, I will, in the description, refer to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which Figure I is a view, in side elevation, of a burner and fuel feeding mechanism constructed according to my invention. Fig. II is a view of the burner in central, vertical section. Fig. III is a top plan view of the burner. Fig. IV is a similar view, with the cover removed.
Referring more in detail to the parts:-1 designates the burner base, which is preferably circular in form and is provided with theupturned edge flange 1', and supported by the legs 2. In the center of base 1 is the opening 3, around which is located the upwardly projecting collar 4 to prevent the escape of oilthrough said opening when the burner is being started in operation.

In the side of cover 8 is an opening within which is secured a tube 9, through which .air is admitted to the interior of the burner. Located above the burner unit are the tanks 10 and 11, adapted for respectively containing oil and water, and being provided with Projecting through tube 9 is a pipe 14, the inner end of which is bent downwardly to discharge onto the center of plate 6 and terminates a short distance above said plate, as indicated in the drawings. The upper end of pipe 14; terminates in a funnel 15, which is adapted to receive the oil and water from the tank outlet pipes 12 and 13.
To start the burner in operation. a small quantity of oil is allowed to flow from the oil tank through pipe 14 onto the plate (3, and thence into the burner base portion 1, where it is ignited. When the heat rising from the burning oil has heated the plate (3, the valves on the pipes 12 and 13 are opened and a supply of both oil and water permitted to pass down through pipe 14. to be dropped, simultaneously, onto plate 6. Plate 6, being heated as described, causes a vaporization of the liquids, which vapors commingle with each other and with the air admitted through tube 9, to form a combustible fuel, which upon being ignited, is forced downwardly over the edges of plate 6 by the draft admitted through tube 9, where it meets the up draft from the opening in the bottom of base 1, and is forced outwardly through the channel between the base and cover flanges.
By providing the burner with both an up and a down draft, a better disintegration of the fuel is secured, resulting in a more nearly perfect combustion than could be secured if the draft were from either the top or bottom alone, and by applying the oil and water to the generating plate simultaneously, the sudden vaporization of the water prevents the solid particles in the oil from adhering to the plate when discharged thereonto.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.
