To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, GEORGE O. CnAwroRD, a citizen of the United States, residing at South WVeymouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Caterers Cups, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to a receptacle which, while it may be applied to various uses, is primarily intended for use as at caterers cup or receptacle to contain charlotte russe or the like and adapted to be placed upon the table when filled therewith or with food of any suitable nature.

In order that the principles of the invention may be fully understood, I have set forth one type or embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of a receptacle embodying my invention, when in condition for use; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the receptacle is preferably formed; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the receptacle in a closed condition; Fig. 5 is a vertical, central section upon the line 55 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a plan View of a container and a series of receptacles positioned therein; and Fig. 7 is a plan view of another form of blank from which the receptacle may be formed.

Referring to that single type or embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, the blank from which the receptacle is preferably formed is indicated at 1. Preferably the receptacle is formed from a single blank and hence in such embodiment of the inven tion the body and the base of the receptacle are integral.

IVhile the invention is capable of use in different. relations and for different purposes, I contemplate using the receptacle embodying the same primarily as a caterers cup to receive charlotte russe or other confections or viands. In such contemplated use of the receptacle it is, of course, intended to place it. upon a dining table, and hence a substantial as well as sightly receptacle is hi hly desirable.

So far as I am aware, in cups or receptacles adapted to contain charlotte russe the base has not heretofore been made integral with the body but has been formed as a sep arate disk or portion to be forced or wedged into the cylindrical or slightly tapering body portion. Furthermore, so far as I am aware, a cup or receptacle to contain charlotte russe or the like has never been made collapsible nor of a form other than cylindrical. In certain types of the invention, it is desirable to provide feet 9, which when the receptacle is assembled elevates the base thereof above its support. Such feet may extend from either the wings or base. If desired, feet may be also struck as represented in Fig. 1 from that portion of either wing that is united with the base, and in such case the line of union of each wing with the base is partially interrupted as shown. In such case feet are struck from the material of the base and hence

WVhile the receptacle when assembled may be of any desired form, preferably the same is polygonal and as here shown it is hexagonal. Obviously the

3 and 4 may be of unequal extent to form unequal portions of the body of the cup, but preferably and in one form of the invention each wing comprises a main or central portion and extensions, the whole comprising three sections of the hexagonal body, the base 2 being as described united with the central section of each wing. Each wing is scored along the line of union of the section thereof. Each of such sections is here shown as having a foot 9 thereon. The corresponding ends of the wings may be united together in any desired manner and for the purpose one of said wings is herein indicated as slightly elongated to provide flaps 10 and 11 that may be glued or otherwise suitably secured, preferably to the inner face of the opposing wing.

I am not to be restricted to two wings extending from the base, for modifications will occur to one skilled in the art, and the flaps 10 and 11 if employed may be otherwise disposed, as, for example, one upon each wing.

Thus the wing 4 comprises a main or central portion and extensions, the wing 3 being devoid of extensions. Preferably the receptacle is so formed as to be collapsed that a number may be packed in a small space for shipment or storage. In the present type of the invention and to facilitate such collapse of the receptacle, the base 2 is creased or scored along the central line 12 thereof, so that the receptacle when assembled may be folded along such scored line 12 and upon the line of union of adjacent ends of the wings, if two are employed and preferably along the base lines of the flaps l0 and 11. It is apparent that, in the present embodiment of the invention, the base 2 may, when the receptacle is collapsed, be folded either inwardly or outwardly but preferably, for the sake of compactness, it is folded inwardly as indicated in Figs. 4 and The upper edge of each wing may have any desired contour, a scalloped formation being indicated.

Heretofore, so far as I am aware, cups to contain charlotte russe and the like have been Such cups are usually placed by the caterer or confectioner in a container 13 adapted to receive six of such receptacles as indicated in Fig. 6, or nine, or other desired number. lVhen such cups are of cylindrical formation and are placed in'a container they contact with each other and with the walls of the receptacle along a single line only and hence are liable to be collapsed. As indicated, each receptacle contacts with the neighboring receptacles or with a neighboring receptacle and a side of the container along two opposite portions of considerable extent, so that if a hexagonal form of receptacle be employed, the contact is along something more than one third of the outer surface of the body of the receptacle. Thus the polygonal form of the receptacle insures increased stability of the receptacle in the container.

That is to say, in the construction shown in Fig. 3 two feet might be provided upon each of the wings and in the case of the construction shown in Fig. 7 four feet might be provided upon the elon gated Wing.

Having thus described one type or embodiment of the invention, I desire it to be understood that although specific terms are employed, they are used in a descriptive and generic sense, and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the following claims.

1. A collapsible receptacle having a collapsible base, wings formed with said base and adapted to form the upright wall of the receptacle, said wings each having a main portion and one or more of said main portions having an extension or extensions, said wings being adapted to circumscribe said base and attaching provisions upon adjacent portions of the wings, whereby the portions of the receptacle are adapted to be relatively positioned for use.

2. A collapsible receptacle having a collapsible base, wings formed with said base and adapted to form the upright wall of the receptacle, said wings each having a main portion and one or more of said main portions having an extension or extensions, said wings being adapted to circumscribe said base, attaching provisions for securing said wings in assembled position with relation to said base, said receptacle being provided with feet.

3. A collapsible receptacle comprising a longitudinally scored polygonal base 2 having

9, 9 along two opposite sides of said base, the remaining sides of said base being unattached to said wings, the said wings each having a plurality of sections scored along their lines of union, feet being formed upon the section of each wing that is attached to the base and also upon one or more of the remaining sections and flaps 10 and 11 for uniting the wings.

4. A receptacle comprising a polygonal base 2 longitudinally scored and two

3 and 4 each comprising a central section and two side sections, said wings being scored along the line of union of said sections, the middle sections only of said wings being united to the base 2, the sections that are not united to the base having feet 9 formed thereon and flaps 10 and 11 formed upon side sections of one of said wings, there being a line of scoring at the base of each of said flaps, each flap being adapted to be united to the opposing wing, the receptacle being adapted to be collapsed along the scored line of the base and along the scored lines at the bases of said flaps.

5. A collapsible receptacle having a collapsible base, wings formed with said base and adapted to form the upright wall of the receptacle, said wings each having a main portion and one or more of said main portions having an extension or extensions, said wings being adapted to circumscribe said base and to conform to the contour thereof, and attaching provisions upon the adjacent portions of the wings, whereby the portions of the receptacle are adapted to be relatively positioned for use.

6. A collapsible receptacle having a collapsible base, wings formed with said base and adapted to form the upright wall of the receptacle, said wings each having a main portion and one or more of said main portions having an extension or extensions free from said base, said wings being adapted to eircumscribe said base and to conform to the contour thereof, and means for attaching the wings together.

7. A collapsible receptacle having a collapsible base, wings formed with said base and adapted to form the upright wall of the receptacle, said wings each having a main portion and one or more of said main portions having an extension or extensions free from said base, said wings being adapted to circuinscribe said base and to conform to the contour thereof, one or more of said wings having a flap or flaps extending therefrom to which the other wing is adapted to be secured.

8. A collapsible receptacle having a collapsible base, wings formed with said base and adapted to form the upright Wall of the receptacle, the said base being polygonal in contour, said wings each having a main portion and one or more of said main portions having an extension or extensions free from said base, and one or more of said wings being scored, whereby the said wings may conform to the contour of the base, and provisions for securing said wings together.

9. A collapsible receptacle having a collapsible base, wings formed with said base and attached thereto only where so integrally formed, said wings each having a main portion and one or more of said main portions having an extension or extensions free from said base but adapted to embrace the base, and provisions for attaching together the adjacent edges of said wings.
