Be it known that I, Irvin G. VTHTLOW, a
I citizen of the United States, residing at Niles,
in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented new and Vuseful Improvements in Stools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stools, and its primary object is to provide a device of this character which is especially adapted for use by motormen and in stores, and one wherein the seat is resiliently supported to prevent the vibrations of the car from being transferred to theoccupant of the seat and to prevent any chock incident to the initial occupancy of the seat.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a stool wherein the foot rest is adapted to limit the movement of the seat in both directions.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a stool which is simple, durable and efficient, and which can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, where- 1n:

Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on a plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow, and Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on a plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a modified form of the stem or bar and socket. K
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 1 designates a portion of the floor of a building or the platform of a car.
2 designates the vertical support, 3 the post and 4. the seat of my improved stool. The support 2 consists of a hollow cylindrical member of suitable length, and its lower end is closed by means of a plug 5. A stem or bar 6 is secured to the plug 5 and extends-downwardly from the lower end of the support 2. The stem or bar 6 provides means by which the support 2 is secured to the floor or platform, said stem or bar passing through a socket 7 let into the upper l:surface of the floor or plat-form. The socket '7 is provided with a horizontally disposed flange S, and is secured in applied position by means of screws 9 or their equivalents, which are let through said flange and en- 'tered into the floor or platform 1. The stem 'or bar 6 may be angular' in cross-section as E,disclosed in Fig. 2 3 of the drawing, or circular in cross-section as disclosed in Fig. 4 of the drawing. The post 3 is slidably received by the support 2, and is provided at its lower end with an elongated vertical slot 10. An expansible spring l1 is mounted within the support 2 between the plug 5 and the lower end of the post 3, said spring being adapted to yieldingly support the seat 4.
The movement of the seat l is limited in both directions by the horizontal bar 12 of a foot rest 13, said bar passing transversely through the support 2 and through the slot 10 in the post 3. The bar 12 extends later'- ally beyond the support 2 in both directions, and the outer ends thereof are supported by braces 14: which are formed integrally with the bar and which are secured at their lower free ends to the support by means of screws 15 or their equivalents. The seat 4t is secured to the post 3 by means of a hinge 1G to permit it to be thrown into a vertical position when not in use. As the seat 4 is supported by the spring 1l, the stool is admirably adapted for use by motormen, said spring being designed to take up and absorb vibrations of the car. It should be apparent that the stool is also adapted for use in stores,the resilient supporting of the seat 4; preventing` any jar incident to the initial occupancy of the stool, and the hinging of the seat permitting it to be swung beneath the counter out of the way when the stool is not in use.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and mode of operation of the invention should be understood without a further extended description.
Changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having fully described and illustrated my invention, what I claim is:
1. A stool comprising a hollow support, a post slidably received by the support and provided with a slot, a seat secured to the bar being adapted to limit the movement of y the post in both directions and to form a foot rest.
2. A stool comprising a support, a post slidably mounted on the support and pro vided with -a slot, a seat secured to the post, a spring carried by the support to sustain the post, and a foot rest secured to the support and passing through the slot in the post, said foot rest being adapted to limit the movement of the post in both directions.
3. A stool comprising a support, a post slidably mounted on the support, a seat secured to the post, a spring carried by t-he support to sustain the post, and a foot rest secured to the support, said foot rest being connected with the post to limit the movement of the post in both directions.
4l. A stool comprising a hollow support, a plug closing one end of the support, a stem secured to the plug, a socket, a post slidably received by the support and provided With a slot, a seat secured to the post, a spring mounted Within the support bet-Ween the plug and the post, and a foot rest secured t0 the support and passing through the slot in the post, said foot rest being adapted to limit the movement of the postin both directions.
