Be it known that 1, EVA L. RYORAFT, a citizen of the United States of America, re siding at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar- Alarms, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to improvements in burglar alarms and more specifically in the device illustrated and described in the United States Patent #8:l8,l29, issued to me on the 26th day of March, 1907.
This device which is adapted to be attached to a window casing irrespective of the position of the lower sash and without .marring the parts with which it connects,
is actuated when the said sash is moved upwardly and the object of the invention described in the present application is to provide in addition to the above named features, a means which will cause the alarm to be sounded when the upper sash is moved downwardly and which may be applied without injury to the surface of the wood and irrespective of the position occupied by the said upper sash in relation to the lower one I attain this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated and in which Figure 1represents a fragmentary vertical section through the two sashes comprised in a window, showing the alarm in operative position in the channel of the lower sash. Fig. 2a vertical central section through the device, taken along a line 22, Fig. 1, and Fig. 8-a horizontal section taken along a line 33, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the reference character 5 designates the window casing provided with spaced channels 6 and 7 which respectively guide the upper sash 8 and the lower sash 9 in their vertical movements.
The numeral 10 designates my improved burglar alarm which comprises a casing 11 which incloses the clock movement 12, a therewith connected gong l8 and a U-shaped spring clamp 14: by means of which the device is attached to the casing 5.
The clamp 1 1 comprises the U-shaped member 15, the ends of which are provided with thumb pieces 15 and a centrally upwardly ranging member 16 which connects with the arch of the first named member by an intermediate integral portion 17 and which is secured to the casing 11 by means of bolts or rivets 18.
A lever 19 is fulcrumed upon a downwardly ranging projection 20 of the casing, its upper, normally horizontal arm 19, engaging a pendant 21 integral with a shaft 22 included in the clock movement and which carries the double acting pawl 23 which by engagement with the teeth of a cog wheel 2%, actuates the hammer arm 24? when during disengagement of the extremities of the arm 19 and the pendant 21, the shaft 22 is allowed to oscillate, which movement is imparted thereto by a spring 25 which is wound by means of a knob 26.
The curved, opposite arm 19 of the lever 19, whose extreme portion extends substantially in parallel relation to the arm 19 below the gong 13, projects through a slot 16 in the member 16 of the spring clamp and terminates in a downwardly ranging helical spring 27, the lower end of which engages in practice, the upper surface of the lower sash 9 of the window.
One of the normally divergent arms 15 of the resilient member 15 of the clamp, has a laterally extending integral lug 28 provided with a pin or bolt 29 which provides a fulcruni for a lever 30, one arm 30 of which engages, in practice, the under surface of the arm 19 of the lever 19, in, proximity to 1 its extremity, while the opposite arm is pro vided with a peripherally serrated, curved head 50 which, when the device is in operative position, engages the inner front surface of the upper sash 8. The lever 30 is furthermore provided with a longitudinal slot 30 through which the fulcrum pin 29 projects and which allows the adjustment of the said lever in accordance with the proportions of the window to which the alarm is applied.
A spring 31, the upper end of which is secured to a projection 32 on the arm 15 of the member 15, engages with its lower eX- tremity, a laterally ranging lug 30 on the lever 30, with the object of maintaining the latter in resilient contact with the surface engaged by the serrated head 30.
In the drawings, the improved burglar alarm has been illustrated in its operative position in relation to the window, the normally diverging arms of the member 15 of the spring clamp having been compressed to frictionally engage the sides of the channel 7 which guides the lower sash 9, during its up and downward movement. The device being thus held in fixed relation to the window casing, is positioned so that the extremity of the helical spring 27 on the lower arm 19 of the lever 19 engages the upper surface of the lower sash while its opposite arm 20 engages the pendant 21 to hold the shaft 22 against oscillation.
The serrated edge of the head 30 of the lever 30 is brought in engagement with the surface of the adjacent portion of the upper sash and is maintained in contact therewith by action of the spring 31, while its arm 30 projects subj acent the arm 19 of the lever 19.
WVhen the lower sash 9 of the window is raised the pressure exerted on the resilent member 27 of the lever 19 will cause the latter to turn about its fulcrum with the result that its upper extremity is moved out of engagement with the pendant 21, thereby permitting the oscillatory movement of the shaft 22 which is actuated through instrumentality of the intermediate gearing, by the unwinding of the spring 25 and which causes the clapper at the end of the hammer arm 24 to engage the gong 19 to sound the alarm. The same effect is produced when the upper sash 8 is lowered, as the downward movement thereof will cause the lever 30 to turn about its fulcrum by the frictional contact of its head 30 with the surface of the said sash, with the result that its arm 30 and in consequence the superposed arm 19 of the lever 19 are *aised. It will thus be observed that the device may be attached to any window irrespective of its proportion and without the use of screws, pins or other damaging fastening appliances and that it will operate with equal results when the lower sash is partly raised or the upper one partly lowered for ventilating purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A burglar alarm comprising in combination a gong, a spring-actuated mechanism adapted to sound the same, means normally restraining the said mechanism and adapted to release the same by the upward motion of one of its ends, and a longitudinally adjustable lever arranged'to lift the said means with one of its arms when its opposite arm is depressed.
2. A burglar alarm comprising in combination a gong, a spring actuated mechanism adapted to sound the same, means normally restraining the said mechanism and adapted to release the same by the upward motion of one of its ends, a longitudinally movable lever arranged to lift the said means with one of its arms when its opposite arm is depressed and a resilient member engaging the said lever so as to impel it longitudinally.
3. The combination with a window frame including a downwardly movable sash, of a burglar alarm comprising a gong, a springactuated mechanism adapted to sound the same, a member normally restraining the said mechanism and a lever sustaining the said member with one of its arms while its opposite arm is in frictional engagement with the said sash.
4. The combination with a window frame, including upper and lower sashes, of a burglar alarm comprising a gong, a springactuated mechanism adapted to sound the same, a member supported upon the lower sash, normally restraining the said mechanism and a lever in frictional engagementwith the upper sash and sustaining the said member with its opposite arm.
