3c it known that l,JonN llMuAuuAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and Stale of Missouri, have invelltcd certain new and useful Improvements in Generators; and I do declare the followin f to be a full, clear, and exact description o the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to thc letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to generators, and more particularly to a device of that class in which vapor is generated from a liquid fuel and treated to secure a combustible gas for lighting or heating purposes.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a generator for heating or lighting systems, which is provided with a return pipe and burner for heating the liquid fuel entering the generator, and a further object is to provide a generator which is simple and economical, both in construction and operation.
In accomplishing these objects I provide the improved details of structure Which Will presently be fully described and pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the ac companying drawings forming part of this specification, in which like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure I is a` view in side elevation, of a generator' constructed according to my invention. Fig. II is an enlarged sectional vievv of a portion of the generator tube. Fig. III is a central vertical sectional view of Fi I.
Itegerring more in detail to the parts ,f1 designates the main fuel feed pipe, Which may be mounted on a base 2, or other suitable means, and projects at its upper end throu h the generator casing 3, Where it is threa ed into, or connected in ay suitable manner With a generating tube 4 contained in said casing.
Tube 4 has a central channel 5, provided with abranch 6, Which latter registers with the feed channel 7 in pipe 1; said pipe having a port 8 through which the fuel is delivered to the apparatus.
In the channel in pipe 4 is a valve stem 10, provided at its inner end with a Wire 11, which is adapted to project through the contracted exit port 12 of said tube, and has a flfmge 13 adapted to seat against the shoulder 14 in channel 5 between the connecting channclG and port 12, to close the channel against the passage of fuel therethrough.
Channel 5 is not of the same diameter throughout, but tapers inwardly from near the exit port to the seat of flange 13, and has a beveled head 23 leading to port 12, to assist the valve needle in finding its seat therein.
Tube 4 is offset inwardly at its inner end, and projects through the end of casing 3, with its shoulder bearing against the inner surface of said casing, and carried on the projecting portion of said tube is a mixing chamber 19, having air inlet ports 20, and a series of perforations 21 between said ports and casing 3.
Telescoping Within the free end of the mixing chamber is a tube 22, and 22 indicates a set screw for securing said tube in a desired position in relation to the air inlet ports; the outer end of said tube also telescoping Within the tube 24 which leads to the lamps or other burners which the vapor from the generator is to supply with fuel.
25 indicates a` union, of any suitablepattern, with which pipe 24 is connected, and from Which individual supply pipes may lead to separate lamps or burners. Opening from union 25 is a pipe 26, which leads back to the casing 3, and projects thereinto beneath the main tube 4, there being perforations in said pipe to form a burner 27, ,through which vapor may escape and be burned beneath tube 4, for the purpose of heating same.
28 indicates a mass of absorbent, and prefn erably non-inflammable material which is packed around pipe 26, and Which may bel saturated with liquid fuel when it is desired to start the generator, to create an initiatory heat for generating the first IioW of fuel.
When in use the parts are assembled as described, and the vapor tube branched to any desired number of lamps, or to other vapor burning devices, and the port 8 connected with a source of li uid fuel supply.
When an o eration of the generator is desired, a small quantity of oil or gasolene is poured over the absorbent material in the bottom of easing 3, and the liquid fuel turned into the tube 4 by withdrawing the flange 1.3 from its seat, to allow the liquid to flow into the portion of the tube channel over the saturated packing in the bottoni of the casing. The oil or gasolene carried by the packing is then ignited and the heat rising therefrom heats the tube 4, and vapo riZes the liquid in the tube channel. After vaporization, the fuel passes through the exlt port 12, into andl throu l1 the mixer to the supply pipe 22, the flow eing regulated by the valve 11 on the end of stem 10. As the vapor passes through the mixer, it mingles with the air admitted through ports 20 and perforations 2l, to form a combustible fuel gas, a suction being formed inthe direction of the supply pipe, Which tends to draw the air into the mixer and force saine through said pipe. As before stated, pipe 22 is supplied With a suitable union'for branch pipes, or carries said branches directly, one of said branches being the return f 'pipe 26, which conducts the vapor back to the burner 27, beneath the generating tube, so that after the initiatory generation, the burner may be lighted, and the liquid flow ing into the tube 4 be vaporized thereby to supply the various burners with proper fuel. After the burner 27 has been lighted, the fuel mixture may be regulated by moving the telesooping member 22 to increase or diminish the quantity of air admitted throu h portsv20, so that a perfect mixture may e secured. By constructing Vthe channel in tlegenerating tube'in the manner described, sufficient space is provided for the expansion of the after,generation, so that the pressure therefrom does not interfere with the proper regulation oi' the inlet valve nor the inflow mi liquid.
l. have shown an improved valve in connection willi my generator, which prevents the widening ol the port l2, incident to the usual jamming by the needle valve commonly used in apparatus of this kind, which valve consists oil a needle of nickel steel, or like material, and is of the same diameter throughout, and rounded at the end, so that when moved toward its port, it will readily find the entrance, or if it should not register perfectly will bend instead of jamming and enlarging the port, and When seated entirely within the port will not ll saine completely and grind the surface when turned, so as to prevent a proper regulation of the fuel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination with a generator mechanism, of a mixer having a single chamber, said Chamber bein provided, near one end, with main air inta re ports, and near its oppositie end With auxiliary air intake ports of less area than said main ports, a discharge member leading from said generator mechanism and adapted for discharge into the mixer chamber intermediate the main and auxiliary air intake ports,a fuel supply pipe, and a connecting tube adapted to slide in both said mixing chamber and supply pipe substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
