PROCESS OF MORDANTING FIIBRO'US MATERIAL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND BLUMEN- THAL, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and resident of Biebrich-on-the-Rhine, Prussia, Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Methods of Mordanting Fibrous Materials, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a method of mordanting fibrous materials with the aid of waste lyes from the manufacture of gallic acid, and gallaminic acid and containing small residues of tannic acid. Such lyes result from the conversion of the aqueous extract of the gall by hydrolytic separation by means of acids, or fungus or ammonia into gallic or gallaminic acid. The residual lyes which contain besides small residues of tannic acid, sugar and extractive substances of gall which it has not been possible to isolate and which cannot be closely defined, have hitherto found no industrial use. It has now been found that these waste lyes have the property of fixing chrome oXid on the fiber and obtaining true colors with mordant dye stuffs. These lyes are adapted to replace entirely tartar, tartar substitute, lactic acid and lignorosin (calcium lignosulfonate) and in consequence of the cheapness of the waste lyes can be generally used.
Sulfuric acid forms a useful addition to the mordanting bath. Instead of chrome, aluminium compounds may be used.
Example :100 kg. of wool, yarn or piece goods is treated with 2% potassium bichromate, and 4% of waste lye, or 2% potassium bichromate, l% of waste lye and 117% sulfuric acid. The animal fiber, well washed, is heated slowly to boiling point in Specification of Letters Patent.

the mordanting bath is thoroughly washed and then dyed. The discharging of the dye from the mordanted fiber takes place in the same manner as with fibers treated with lactic acid or lignorosin. For instance there is obtained with 3% waste lye of 30 Be, 111 70 potassium bichromate and 12 sulfuric acid exactly the same effect as with 3% lactic acid, 19 potassium bichromate and 1-l*% sulfuric acid.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. The herein described method of mordanting fibrous materials consisting in treating the fibers with waste lyes from the manufacture of gallic acid and gallaminic acid containing small residues of tannic acid, together with a suitable salt.
2. The herein described method of mordanting fibrous materials consisting in treating the fibers with potassium bichromate and waste lyes from the manufacture of gallic acid and gallaminic acid and containing small residues of tannic acid.
3. The herein described method of mordanting fibrous materials consisting in treat ing the fibers with an acid potassium bichromate and waste lyes from the manufacture of gallic acid and gallaminio acid and containing small quantities of tannic acid, in the presence of sulfuric acid.
