UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EPHRIAM A. FOSTER, OF SANDUSKY, OHIO.
GATE
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Errinimr A. FOSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the t'ol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in gates and more particularly in the class ot' extensible swinging gates, and the object is to provide means whereby the gate can be extended or the extensible section moved inwardly or rearwardly on the main section thereby permitting a person to pass through the gate without the necessity of swinging the entire gate.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out. in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure l is a view in side elevation showing the gate in its extended position, parts being broken away to show the roller bearings. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the gate in its contracted position. Fig. 3 is a tragmentary view of one of the upper corners of the gate on an enlarged scale with parts broken away, and Fig. l is a vertical transverse section on the line 4t, t, of Fig. 3.
A, represents t-he main section of the gate, which is hinged to a post l. The upper rail or bar 2 of the section is preferably grooved along its lower edge, as at 3. On the lower rail 4 and at the outer end thereof a pocket 5 is formed tor the reception of balls 6, 6. The extensible or movable section 7 is received between the upper and lower rails 3 and ft of the main section A and passes between the side bars 8 ot the main section. The side bars 9 of the movable section extend on each side of the upper and lower rails 3 and 4l. The upper rail l0 of the movable section is provided with a pocket 11 at its inner end and this pocket has balls 12, 12 therein, which are adapted to be received in the groove 3 of the upper rail 2- of the main section. The lower rail 13 01' the movable section is grooved along its lower edge at 111, and in this groove the balls G, G in the Speccaton of Letters Patent.

pocket 5 are received. "The grooves 3 and 14 of the rails 2 and 13 are formed. approximately the entire length of the rails. The groove 3 extendsnearly to the outer end of the rail 2, and the groove 14 extends approximately to the inner end oit the rail 13. By means of the balls 6 and 12, the movable section is permitted to slide with freedom inwardly and outwardly in the main section. The movable section 7 is normally in engage ment with a latch post 15 to close the gateway.
The two sections can be covered with wire or other suitable material to till the space between the upper and lower rails. Then the extensible section is t'orced inwardly upon the main section and the gate permitted to swing open, it relieves the strain and leverage on the hinges and is much more easily swung open.
It is evident that more or less slight changes might be made in the form and arrangement ot the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth, but
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An extensible gate, comprising slidably connected sections, one embracing and approximately tting the other, balls interposed between the adjacent edges of said sections and ways or grooves in one edge in which the balls travel, and vertical side bars connecting the horizontal members of said sections for confining their movement with respect to each other to a direct rectilinear path.
2. A gate comprising main and movable sections, the main section being grooved along its upper edge and having a pocket formed in the lower edge, the movable section having a groove along its lower edge and a pocket on its upper edge, and balls in the pockets of the two sections adapted to be received in the grooves whereby the movable section is capable' of sliding in the main section.
3. A swinging gute comprising main and the grooves, Whereby'the movable section is movable sections, the main section having capable of sliding in the main section. 10 grooves along its upper edge and :L pocket at In teetmony whereof I aX my signature the forward end of the lower edge, the movin presence of two Witnesses.
