To all whom t may concern Be it know n that I, ALEXANDER T. Tori-ULL, a citizen of the United States,
' residing at Davey, in the county of Lancaster, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in gates of that type commonly known as sliding gates.
The principal object of the invent-ion is to provide a supporting frame including a pair of superimposed tracks, a guide arm connected to the frame, a gate slidably mounted on the frame within the guide arms, and a carriage carried by the gate and engageable with the track members to support the gate against tilting movements.
Another object of the invention is to provide a gate of the character described which is provided with front and rear handles adapted to respectively contact with the guide arm and thereby limit the opposite movements of said gate.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sliding gate of the character described which is composed of a relatively few number of parts, is therefore simple in construction, is easy of operation, and is cheap to manufacture.
Tith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construct-ion within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a gate constructed in accordance with my invention, the gate being shown in full lines as in its closed position, and in dotted lines in a semi-closed position, Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view showing the gate in its open position, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, Fig. t is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 4-11 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, f

Referring to the drawings, the invention comprises a supporting frame designated as a whole by the reference letter A and a gate which is designated as a whole by the reference letter B. The supporting frame consists of a pair of spaced fence posts 5 5 which are connected by upper and lower longitudinal frame members G and 7 respectively. The front faces of the posts 5 are each formed intermediate its ends with spaced transverse recesses S-8 andV disposed within each alined pair of recesses are the ends of a horizontal longitudinally disposed track 9, said ends being secured to the posts by nails or other suitable fastening means. Secured to that post 5 adjacent the gate opening is a vertically disposed guide arm 10, the ends 11-11 thereof being inn wardly bent and engaged with the upper and lower ends of said post, said ends 11 forming bearings for anti-friction rollers Sli-dably mounted upon the frame and within the guide arm 10 is the gate B. This gate includes a rectangular frame which consists of spaced upper and lower longitudinal members 13 and 14 respectively and front and rear end members 15 and 16 respectively. The end members 15 and 16 are centrally connected by a longitudinal frame member 17. Secured to the inner faces of the front and rear members 15 and 16 of the gate frame are longitudinal carriage snpporting arms 18-18, said arms being respectively disposed above and below the tracks 9. The rear ends of these arms project beyond the rear frame member 16 of the gate and have connected thereto a carriage 20. This carriage includes a pair of spaced vertically disposed arms 21-21 which are connected at their ends to the rear ends of the supporting arms 18 by means of bolts 22 or other suitable fastening means. Spacing washers 23-23 are disposed around said bolts for holding said arms Q1 in proper spaced relation. These arms 21 are disposed on opposite sides of the tracks 9, and disposed between said arms above and below w mw.
the tracks are upper and lower anti-friction rollers 211 and 25 respectively, said rollers being suitably journaled in said arms. It will be observed that the gate slides longitudinally of the frame between the anti-friction rollers 12 of the guide arm 10, and is supported at its rear end by the carriage 20. Respectively associated with the frame members 15 and 16 of the gate are forwardly extending handles 26 and 27.
From the foregoing, it will be observed that when the gate is in its closed position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the handle 27 eoacts with the guide arm 10 to limit the forward movement of said gate, and that when the gate is in its open position, as shown in Fig, 2 of the drawings, the handle 26 will coact with the guide arm 10 to limit the rearward movement of said gate. It will furthermore be observed that the gate can be slid back and forth with a minimum amount of friction owing to the front end of the gate being supported upon antifriction rollers and the rear end being supported by the carriage. It will also be observed that by means of the anti-friction rollers of the carriage any upward or downwa-rdtilting movement of the gate will be prevented.
lhat is claimed is:
1. In a gate, the combination with a` supporting frame consisting of a pair of spaced posts, upper and lower longitudinal frame members connecting said posts, a pair of longitudinal tracks disposed above one an other and connected at their ends to said posts in spaced relation to the longitudinal frame members, a vertically disposed guide arm having its ends inwardly bent and engaged with the upper and lower ends of one of said posts, an anti-friction roller journaled upon the lower end of said guide arm, a gate disposed within and supported by the roller of said guide arm for slidable movements, a carriage carried by said gate and cooperating with the tracks to hold the gate against tilting movements, and a handle carried by the gate and coperating with the guide arm to limit the movements of said gate in one direction.
2. In a gate, the combination with a slipporting frame including a pair of superimposed tracks, a guide arm connected to said frame, a gate disposed within and supported by said guide arm for slidable movements, said gate comprising a rectangular frame including spaced front and rear end me1nbers, longitudinal carriage supporting arms secured to said front and rear members, said arms being respectively disposed above and below the tracks of the supporting` frame and having their rear ends projecting beyond the end of the gate frame, a carriage connected to the rear ends of said supporting arms, upper and lower rollers carried by said carriage respectively disposed above and below the respective tracks, and handles respectively secured to the front and rear end members of the gate frame and adapted to respectively engage the guide arm to limit the movements of the gate in opposite directions.
