UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS P. TAYLOR, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
COMBINED ABDOMEN-COMQPRESS AND HOSE-SUPPORTER.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Tnoaras P. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairiield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Abdomen Oomprcss and Hose Supporter; and I do hereby declare the following to l e a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to combined abdomen compress and hose supporters, and has for its object to provide a device of this descrip tion in which the compress element which acts against the abdomen shall be capable of an adjustment independent of that which is brought about by the use of the ordinary band passed around the waist of the wearer, and with this end in view my invention consists in the arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and then particularly pointed out in the claims which conclude this description.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 illustrates a front elevation of my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of my improvement as it appears when in use on a corset, the latter being illustrated upon a human body as shown in outline.
In my application, Serial No. 435,303, filed on even date herewith, I have claimed a structure suspended by an elongated means of support immediately in front of the lower central portion of the hypogastric region of the abdomen, and I do not wish to be under stood herein as laying any broad claim to such construction, the end aimed at by my present invention being to secure Letters Patent for a specific form of construction.
1 is an elongated stiff resilient sheet metal strip having at its upper end an opening 2 for attachment to a stud of a corset, and 3, at, are adjusting straps secured to the bottom of the strip 1 in any suitable manner, as for instance by eyelets 5.
6 is a flexible pad or covering made of any cloth fabric which is of suitable shape and envelops the lower portions of the straps 3, t, and has depending therefrom the usual hose supporter webbings 7, the upper lateral extremities of said pad being secured to these straps in any ordinary manner as by eyelets S, 9. This covering or pad 6 is extended upwardly as shown at 10 so as to en- Speeification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 27, 1908.
Patented Nov. 10, 1908.
Serial No. 435,307.
velop the greater portion of the strip 1 in order to prevent the latter from discoloring the corset or mutilating the trimmings thereof, and the upper part of this covering 10 is extended laterally to form bands 11, 12, t which are secured waist straps 13, 14, one of which is provided with a buckle 15, whereby the device as a whole may be suspended around the waist of the wearer at a proper tension.
Carried by the straps 13, 14c, are buckles 1G, 17, which, when the device is in proper position on the person of the wearer, occupy positions substantially in front of the hips, and the straps 3, i, are engaged with these buckles in order to exert a tension on the pad (3 independent of that afforded by the tightening of the waist hands.
When myimprovement is in position for use on the wearer, the strip 1 will be suspended from a corset stud in such manner that the pad 6 will lie immediately in front of the lower central portion of the hypogastric region of the abdomen, and the webbings 7 will be engaged with the stockings by means of the clasp appliances ordinarily used.
When the waist bands 13, 14, are tightened, the strip 1 will be forced upwardly thereby causing it to bow outwardly so as to bring the lower end thereof firmly against the lower portion of the corset, whereby an upward pressure is brought to bear against the lower portion of the abdomen, the pad in the meantime lying snugly against the lower front portion of the corset.
By adjusting the straps 3, 4, the pressure against the abdomen may be increased or decreased without manipulating the bands 13, 14c, and the entire area of the pads will be drawn taut in proper lines against the lower portion of the corset by the combined action of the suspending strip, waist bands 1, 1%, independent adjustable bands 3, 1, and the hose supporters. The result of this action is that the abdomen will be forced upwardly and sustained under pressure between the compress formed by the lower portion of the strip 1 and the pad 6, and that portion of the corset below the waist line which closely hugs the person of the wearer.
Of course it will be clearly understood that the extensions 11, 12, are really a part of the waist bands 13, 1 1, and that therefore these bands might be secured directly to the upper part of the strip, and I therefore do not wish to be limited to these extensions. Also, the strip 1 might be made from celluloid, bone, horn, or, in fact, any substance that has the necessary stiffness and resiliency.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A device of the character described, comprising a stiff resilient elongated strip adapted at its upper end to be secured to a stud of a corset fastening, flexible waist straps secured to the upper part of said strip whereby the device may be secured around the person of the wearer, independent adjusting straps secured to the lower extremity of said strip and adjustably fastened to said waist straps, and a suitable pad which envelops the lower portions of said strip and adjustable straps and is secured thereto and has depending therefrom hose supporter webbings.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a stiff resilient elongated strip adapted at its upper end to be secured to a stud of a corset fastening, independent adjusting straps secured-t0 the lower end of said strip, a suitable cloth fabric enveloping the lower portions of said straps and all but the extreme upper portion of said strip said covering having lateral extensions at its up per end and hose supporter webbings depending from its lower edge, and waist straps secured to said extensions and carrying buckles with which said independent straps are engaged.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a stiff resilient elongated strip adapted at its upper end to be secured to a stud of a corset fastening, an abdomen coinpress carried by the lower end of said strip and having hose supporter webbings depending therefrom, waist bands secured to the upper portion of said strip, and adjustable connections between said compress and waist bands, the length of said strip being such that when it is secured in position on the corset stud said compress will be suspended immediately in front of the lower central portion of the hypogastric region of the abdomen.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
