ALeners Patent No. 90,356, date May 25, 1869.
INIPROVEMENT IN LAMP-POSTS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ot the lame.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. GRAHAM, ot' Chillicothe, Ross county, State of Ohio, have invented a and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact desorption of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annflseg. drawings, making a part of this specification, in W 1c v Figure lis a perspective view, with the lamp attached, and showing the base a, and service-pipe and main.
Figure 2 is avertical sectional view, showing the closed bottom a and the opening b, into which the service-pipe c is screwed, or otherwise secured. l
Figure 4 is a sectional view of the lower section, or base, with closed bottom, to be attached to either old or new posts.
Figure 3 is a view of plug, which is to be leaded into the top ofthe lamp-post, to be provided with a short piece of gas-pipe and stop-cock, to which the burner is to be attached, as shown in iig. l. p
The nature of the invention consists in casting the lamp-post with -a closed bottom, a, and having an opening, b, at a proper height, into which is secured the service-pipe c, While the top of the post is provided with the4 plug, short pipe, and stop-cock, as shown in tig. 1 and iig. 3.
The advantages claimed are-lby this mode of construction First, economy, by dispensing with the ten or more feet of gas-pipe usually employed inside the post.
Second, the large gas-space inside thelamp-post prevents the gas freezing up and obstructing the delivery in the coldest weather. Y
Third, the dust, dirt, and condensation of moisture, or impurities fall., to the bottom a, without obstructing the entrance of' gas at b, and its passage to thebnrner, and exit at the burner.
Fourth, the lamp-posts made on this plan are more durable, because oxidation can take place only on the exterior.
The lamp-post may be cast with the bottom at a, closed, or a sleeve or short pipe, g. 4, or its equivalent, secured tothe bottom in any convenient manner.
The ordinary lamp-post may be fitted with a closed bottom in this manner.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isy v l. The plug, iig. 3, provided with a short pipe and stop-cock, in combination with a lamp-post, constructed in the manner herein described, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The enlarged reservoir d, with closed bottom a., to attach to the foot of iron lamp-posts, constructed as and for the purposes herein set forth.
