lJACOB SILVINS AND WlLLIAM T. BAIN, SUN BURY, NSYLVANIA.
12mm Patent No. 65,698, ma June 11, 1867. i
IMPROVEMENT IN LAN-TEEhi-LAMP..`
To ALL--wHoM 1T MAY eoNcEnN: Y
Be it known that we, JACOB SILVINS and WILLIAM T. HAIN, of Sunbury, in the county of Northumberland, und State of Pennsylvania., have invented new and useful Attachments for Lantern-Lamps; and we do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make und use the sume, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part o'fths specification.
This invention relates to certai "new and useful attachments for the lamps of lanterns, whereby the wicks of the former may be adjusted, reis'ed and lowered, and the wicks also deprived of any crustwhich may be upon them, without removing the lamps from the lanterns. V
This invention, therefore, it will be seen,-admits of the wich of a lantern-lump being adjusted nt anytime,
even out of doors in a. strong wind, without the. least danger of, having the light extinguished. In the accompunying drawings- Figure 1 is a side sectional view of a lantern-lmnp provided with my invention. Figure 2, a plan or top view of the same. l Figure 3, adetached view of thegenr by which the Wick -is raised andlowered. Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. n A represents the lamp of a lantern, constructed in the ordinary way, und B is the lamp-burner, the wick of which is raised and lowered by serrated wheels a, placed on the shaft b, which extends horizontally through the burner, as usual. On one end of this shaft thereis a worm-wheel, c, into which a screw, d, gears, the lutter heingat the upper end of avertical shaft, C, which passes through the ln'mp, and has a thumb-wheel, e, on its lower end; said thumb-wheel being within the hollow base e of the lamp, as shown clearly in iig. 1, a. aube, D, being fitted in the lamp for the shaft C to pass through. E is a vertical shaft, which also passes through a. tube, F, fitted 'in the .lamp A, and has a thumb-wheel, f, on its lower end within the base e. On the upper end of this shaft E there is a curved arm, y, which is in line with the top of the wick-tube h, so that by turning the shaft E the arm g will sweep across the top of the wick-tube und elfectuaily scrape onny crust which may have accumuluted on the top of the wick. j y Y A Thus, by this simple arrangement, the wick may be kept in proper order or condition, to wit, raised and lowered, according to the size or height of llame required, andthe crust removed from the wick without detnehing or removing the lamp from the lantern.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Potent- The crust-remover g on the upper end of a, vertical shaf E, which posses through a tube, F, inthe lamp, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
