FRANK w. HUBBARD, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, Ass IeNoR TO REED MANUFAGTURING COMPANY, or ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION,
VISE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Application filed. June 9, 1905. Serial No.- 264,487.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. HUBBARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vises and consists in certain im rovements in the construction thereof as w 1 be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
More particularly the invention relates to that ty e of vises wherein the vise jaws are swivele on a base, the jaws and to to be turned to different angles and loclge at the various angles to which they may be turned.
Heretofore vises of this characterhave been made wherein the base is provided with a circumferential groove, the walls of the groove being arallel with the axis of the base, and the ottom of the groove extend ing outwardly forming square shoulders with which a square headed bolt may enage. This construction involves two deects. One relates largely to the manner of manufacture. It is dlfiicult to get at any imperfections in the castings in the undercut portion of the groove and as a result most vises so constructed have the groove-machined, thus very largely increasing the expense of manufacture A second difficulty arises from the fact that the square headed bolt does not engage the surfaces of the groove with sufficient firmness to readily ock the vise in an adjusted position. In this invention these difficulties are obviated,
the invention being shown in the accom- .panymg drawings as follows Figure 1 shows a plan View of the base. Fig. 2, a section on the line 22 in Fig. 3. Fig. 3, a section on the line 33 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4, a detailed view of the-bolt head.
A marks the vise base and B what is ordinarily termed the fixed aw;-C, the movable jaw. The movable jaw is arranged to slide in the fixed jaw'and is operated by the screw D operating with the nut E in the usual manner. A swivel bolt F extends through the center of the base into the jaw B and 60 swivels the jaw on the base. A groove 0 having a curve with the axis of the vise as a center and preferably forming a com lete annulus is arranged in the top of the a'se. This groove is dove-tailed shape in crosssection, that is it-has sides slanting'to make a means of the handle 72,, may be turned to operate the screw, thus drawing the head g into engagement with the sides of the groove a and clamping the vise. The bevel or wedge shaped construction of the head so increases the power of the clamping device that the vise may be readily set so as to prevent jarring loose. The wedge shape also facilitates the manufacture in the manner heretofore described.
What I claim as new is:
1. In a vise, the combination of a base member; a jaw member swiveled on the base, 7
one of said members having a groove dovetail shaped in cross section and extending in a curve with the axis of the vise as a center; a bolt having a connecting part arrangedin the groove and engaging the sides.
thereof; and means for straining the bolt to clam the base and jaw members together.
2. ln' a vise, the combination of a base member; a jaw member swiveled on the base, one ofsaid members having a groove with an undercut and extending in a curve with the axis of the vise as a center; a bolt having a beveled connecting art arranged in the groove and engaging t e sides thereof and means for straining the bolt to clamp the base and jaw members together. i x
3. In a vise, the combination of a base member; a jaw member swiveled on the base, one of said members having a groove dovetail shaped in cross section and extending in a curve, with the axis of the vise as a center; my hand in the presence of two subscribing" a, boltha a connecting part beveled to witnesses. conform to t e shape of the oove arranged in the groove and engaging," e sides thereof sand means for straining the bolt to clamp Witnesses:
the base and jaw members together. H. O. LORD,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set -M. C. SULLIVAN.
FRANK W. HUBBARD.
