To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Louis H. DEPPE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beardstown, in the county of Cass and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filters, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention consists in certain improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts of filters of that general character used in cistern supply sysems, whereby such a filter is provided 2 a central vertical section through the same.
In said drawings the portions marked A represent the main casing of the filter, B a strainer-box in the top of said lter, C an automatic cut-ofi', D a filter-box, and E a receptacle for receiving the first flow of water.
The casing A is a box-like structure of suitable dimensions formed of any suitable material, preferably sheet-iron or tin, its front side being open for the greater part of its length. On its top is an inlet tting a for connection with the down-spout of the building, and at its bottom an outlet fitting a for connection with the spout leading to the cistern. An inturned flange a5 depends from the top at its front side and serves as a defiector to deflect the incoming water toward the back of the casing.
The strainer-box B is of sheet met-al adapted to fit within the upper portion of the casing A where it is secured by means of supporting rivets or hooks ZJ. It has an inclined coarse screen or strainer B supported on its top which extends a considerable distance outside of the casing. Beneath said strainer B is another coarse strainer B2 supported at its upper end by being connected with the back of the strainer-box and at its lower end on a cross-rod 7J. The space between the cross-rod ZJ and the back of the strainer B is filled by a finer strainer B3 and the extreme bottom of said strainer-box is filled by another strainer B4.
The' automatic cut-offz C is a sheet metal structure of the form most clearly shown in Fig. 1,having side pieces c and being supported in the casing A on a pivot rod c which extends through said side pieces c and the side pieces of the casing A. Said pivot rod c is so located that the upper portion of the cut-off will normally overbalance its lower portion so that its normal position will be that shown in Fig. l, and by dotted lines in Fig. 2. An inclined deflector plate c2 is mounted in said cut-off between its sides and behind the pivot c. A very fine mesh strainer c3 is mounted between the end of said plateland the back edge of said cutoff being curved downwardly to form a pocket. Openings c1L in the form of slots are formed beneath said plate c2 and screenpocket c3 for the discharge of the water.
The filter D consists of a sheet metal casing adapted to fit within casing A and mounted with its top directly beneath the cut-off C. A horizontal screen or strainer D6 is preferably mounted across its top. It is provided with a horizontal partition D which extends from the front toward the back of said box to an appropriate midway point and then is inclined downwardly for a short distance. the lower edge of said horizontal partition to the bottom of said box dividing it substantially vertically into two compartments. The bottom of said box D is open part way across its area and adapted to discharge into the outlet a of the casing. A partition D3 extends from the bottom upwardly a short distance from the screen D2 and the space between said partition D3 and screen D2 is filled with filtering substance D4. A screen D5 extends across the space between the partition D3 and the front side of the box above the opening into the outlet a.
The box E is a suitable box with an open top attached to the front side of the casing A and provided with a neck E around an outlet through its bottom for attachment with a pipe leading to a sewer, or other point of discharge.

The Water coming from the strainer-box B onto the cut-off C will, however, soon fill the pocket 03 composed of the fine-mesh screen and When said pocket is filled with Water the Weight of the inner end of the cut-off will overbalance its outer end and cause said cutofi to shift its position to the position shoivn in Whole lines in Fig. 2, when the Water will run from the deflector plate c2 over the rear edge of the bottom of the cut-ofi", as Well as through the holes c4, through the strainer DG and into the filter-box D behind the screen D2, through which and the filtering material D4 it Will percolate into the compartment behind said screen D2 and pass through the strainer D5, through the outlet ci into the pipe leading to the cistern. As soon as the water ceases toflow the pocket o3 Will empty when the cut-ofi C will resume its normal position as shovvn in Fig. l.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
