SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,218, dated February 19, 1889.

Be it known that we,WILLIAM CHARLES BAYLEss and JAMES CUMMING N IcHoLs, citizens of the United States, residing at Mossy Creek, in the county of Jefferson and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in rater Filters and Cut-O t'fs, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a new and improved water filter and eut-off, the purpose thereof being to strain and purify the water as it passes into the cistern or other receptacle.
It is a further purpose ot' ourinvention to provide simple and easily-operamd means whereby the water may be cut off from the eist-ern or other reservoir andthe intermediate straining and iilterin devices and delivered to any point other than the said cistern, the cut-off being provided with an autom atie lock or holding device, whereby itl is held in normal position. against any force ordinarily brought to bear thereon.
To these ends the invention consists in the several novel features of construction and new combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and then dennitelv pointed. out in th e claims. Y
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the mechanism employed in our invention. i is a central vertical section of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is au edge or side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4- is a side elevation of. filter made separate from cut-off, and Fig. 5 is a central vertical sect-ion of the parts shown in Fig. 5.
In the said drawings, the ret'ercnce-numeral 1 designates the frame or casing of water iilter or strainer, said casing being composed of two parallel walls, 2, inclosed by a front and back, 3, and forming a closed chamber, 4, having an opening, 5, at the top and a similar opening, 6, at the bottom. The top opening is designed to connect by a pipe with the roof of a building. A chute, 8, is hinged at its center within the casin g by a pivot, 9, and to one end of the chute is hinged or pivoted a lever ext-ending out through and movable lengthwise in a slot, 12, arranged in avertieal plane in the top of the casing. The lever rests against and slides lengthwise upon the lower edge of the slot, and is provided at its outer end with a weight, 10, which, by pressing the lever down upon the lower edge of the slot 12, holds the chute 8 when in the position to divert the water through the side outlet,while the downward pressure of the weight holds t-he chute when tilted to divert the water upon the strainers, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 1. The lever is pivoted to the chute, so that the latter is tilted by simply pushing the lever inward or pulling it outward, and as the chute tilts the pivotal connection of the lever permits lthe requisite swinging motion of the lever on the lower edge of the slot 12, which therefore acts as a fulcrum. By moving the lever lengthwise the chute can be Vtilted to the position shown in full lines, Fig.
l, to divert the water to a duct, 19, and through the lateral exit-orifice 11, and by moving the lover to tilt the chute to the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. .1, the water is diverted directly downward into the casing over a strainer or filter composed of a series of parallel bars, 15, which intercept the coarser matter or debris carried by the water.
The duct 19 is composed of a trough-shaped plate inclined from its upper end to the lateral exit-orifice 14. in the side of the casing 1, said plate having its upper edge lying under the center pivot of the chute 8, or approximately, whereby the water may be directed to said duct without passing to the strainers, or the water can be directed down into the casing and through the strainers.
Beneath the parallel bars 15 is arranged a foraminous screen, 16, having an inclination opposite to that of the parallel bars 15. The water passing th rough these bars leaves the coarser foreign matters upon the bars 15, and passes thence to the screen 16, through which the water passes to the outlet or exit 6 at the bottom of the casing.
In front of the lower end of the straine 15 the side wall of the casing is provided with a lateral outletopening, 17, a similar opening being provided in the side wall of the casing at the lower end of the other strainer, 16. The side edges of these lateral outlet-openings 17 are provided with vertical grooves or guideways, and in the latter are arranged thc vertical edges of sliding gates 18, which may be thrown down to the foot. of either the parallel bars or to the foot of the foraminous screen to intercept the descend ing current of water Flowing over either the parallel bars or the foraminons or perforated screen, and thus force the water to pass through the strainers. By raising either of these gates the accumulation of matter floating in the current may be discharged, and thus the casing may be kept clean and the water passing through the casing may be rendered suitable for drinking or other similar purposes.
In Figs. l and the parts numbered as in preceding figure have an identical use andv the same general mechanical structure. In these ligures three strainers are used, all slanted in the same direction, and the openings17 and the gates 1S are all on the same edge, and the other edge is made watertight all the way down, and the bars and the screen 1G and the perforated tin 23 are swayed downward near the middle to serve as -a check to the outward or lateral current of water. In Fig. 5 a turn-back or duct, 22, is used to carry the water (ruiming down the screens near the gates 1S) back and `drop it on the highest part of the next strainer or screen.

The combination, with a casing having a slot in its top, a top inlet,a lateral side outlet, and a bottom. outlet, of an inclined duct rising from the side outlet and extending i11- ward and upward, a tilting chute pivoted at or near its center above the upper end of the inclined duct, and a swinging andlengthwisemovable lever extending through and resting on the lower edge of the slot, and` havingits inner extremity pivoted to one end of the tilting chute and its outer end y carrying a weight for forcing the leverinto `Contact with thelower edge of the slot, substantially as andV for the purposes described.
3. The combination, with a` casing having-.- an inlet, a lateral side outlet, and a bottom outlet, of inclined strainers located between the lateral side outlet and the bottom outlet, an inclined duct rising from the side outlet and extending upward and inward above the strainers, a tilting chute pivoted at or near its center above the strainers and duct, and a lever for tilt-ing the chute, substantially as described. i
4. The combination, with a casing, 1, having an inlet, 5, a lateral side outlet, 14, a bottom outlet, 6, and lateral side orifices, 17, of oppositely-inclined strainers 15 and 16, rising from the lateral side orifices, an adjustable gate, 18, located in each of said orilices at the lower end of the strainer rising therefrom, an inclined duct, 19, rising from the lateral side outlet and extending upward and inward above the strainers, a tilting chute, 8, pivoted above the upper end of the chute, and alever for tilting the chute, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with the casing 1, having a top inlet, 5, a bottom outlet, 6, and a series of lateral outlet-openings, 17, provided at their sides with vertical guidmvays, a seriesof inclined strainers arranged in the casing and having their lower edges extending down to the lower edges of said lateral outlets, and a series of vertically-sliding gates, 18, having their vertical edges arranged in saidguideways, said gates when raised permitting the water passing down the strainers to flow laterally to the outside of the casing, and'when lowered to the edges of the strainers intercept-ing the downtiow and forcing it back upon the straincrs, substantially as described.
6. In a water filter and cut-ott, the combination, with a casing having an upper and a loweroutlet, of an inclined strainer composed of parallel straight bars, and an oppositelyinclined straight strainer composed of a foraminous plate, substantially as described.
7. In a water filter and cut-oit", the combination, with a casing having an upper inlet and alower outlet, and provided with a series of inclined bars and with an oppositely-inclined foraminous plate, of vertically1nova ble gates mounted in the edges of the casing at the foot of the` inclined bars and at the foot of the foraminous plate, substantially as described.
8. The combination, with the easing 1,having an inlet, 5, and outlet (j, and provided with thev inclined chute 19, of the pivoted ohuteS,gravity-lever 10, the inclinedbars 15, and the oppositely-inclined screen 16, substantially as described.
