MOLD
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Application filed December 11, 1907. Serial No. 406,006.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES VVILsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mold, of which the followin is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is an improvement in molds, more especially for chilled car wheels, and has in view primarily a molding flask by which the variation at present experienced in the thickness of flanges and the weight of the wheels, will be eliminated, and a uniform and well balanced wheel pro duced.
The invention further resides in novel means for holding the pattern centrally in the mold, whereby it will not be shifted when the mold is tamped.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speci fication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure. 1 is a central vertical section through a mold embodying my invention, showing my improved car wheel pattern in place therein and the molding sand filling one side of the mold; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows and Fig. 3 is a fra mental-y sectional view, showing a modifier form of the construction.
In the construction of the molding flask, I employ a molding-box or cope 5, and a drag 6, in the nature of what is generally termed a Nowell ring, and. an intermediate chilling-ring 7, the latter being detachably secured to the box 5, preferably by providing each with exteriorly-extending lugs having alining apertures, through which pass bolts 8. The chilling-ring 7 projects a distance within the mold, and is provided with the usual internal molding face of the shape to form the tread and the adjacent portion of the flange of the car wheel, and is fur ther provided, as also the ring 6, with extcriorlyprojecting lugs having alining apertures, through which pass studs 9, the studs, as best shown in Fig. 1, being of reduced diameter and threaded at their upper ends, with the lower portions thereof slightly tapering and having cross-slots for receiving wedges 10, the latter when securely driven in place operating to positively force the Nowell ring to the chilling-ring.
In addition to the cope, chilling-ring and Nowell ring, the mold further includes a bottom board 11 having a serrated inner face, and is adapted to be securely clamped to the top of the Nowell ring by an ordinary form of U-clamp 12, as shown in Fig. 1, or by the modified cam-clamps 13, shown in Fig. 3; the U-clamps 12 engaging suitable lugs formed on the ring 6 and the margin of the bottom board, and the canrclamps each comprising a link 14 pivotally connecting the ring 6 with a lever 15, having a camhead adapted to engage directly with the board 11.
The car wheel pattern which I preferably use in connection with the m old is of slightly less diameter than the internal diameter of the chilling-ring in which it seats, and is provided with means for securely holding it in concentric relation to the chilling-ring, which consists of a plurality of radiallyarrangcd pins 16 adapted to be simultaneously forced through the tread of the wheel by a conical member 17, which is centrally carried in the pattern on a longitudinally arranged screw 18, the said screw being threaded at opposite ends in plates 19 seated and secured in recesses in the opposite faces of the pattern. The opposite ends of the screw are covered by caps 20 which form suitable depressions in the molding sand for receiving the core.
The pins 16 are retracted when the conical member 17 is moved outwardly by the actuation of the screw 18, by springs 21, which are located in recesses in the perimeter of the pattern and interposed between enlargements formed on the pins and the outer walls of the recesses.
In the use of the mold after the pattern has been placed therein and. brought to a central position by the pins 16, the sand, or other molding material, is deposited in the Nowell ring and tamped, and thereafter leveled off with the top edge of the ring, the bottom board 11 during this period being removed. Forcible tamping of the sand is permitted Without danger of shifting the pattern, in view of its rm engagement with the chilling ring by the pins 16. The bottom board 11 can at this time be placed in position and finally secured; the serrations thereon engaging not only the top edge of the ring 6, thus increasing its frictional contact, but also trictionally increases its engagement with the sand. The mold is now in readiness to be turned over and the cope or box 5 brought to the top, this being facilitated by trunnions 22 extending from the mold at diametrically opposite points, After the sand is tamped against the pattern in the cope 5, the mold is parted for removing the pattern between the rings (5 and T by removing the wedges 10, these being the only parts of the mold which are detached in removing the pattern preparatory to the casting operation. This I regard as an im' portant feature of my invention since it is the clamping after the pattern is withdrawn which distorts the mold and gives a more or less imperfect casting.
The casting surface of the chilling ring and that formed by the sand in the Nowell ring is again brought back into perfect register by the studs 9 and secured in this position, without danger of distortion, by replae ing and tightening the wedges 10. As the bottom board 11 is not removed after the pattern is taken out, it does not relax, and when the mold is again fastened for the pouring of the metal and mold within. an exact duplicate of the pattern is provided, which insures an approximately perfect casting.
The invention as shown and described while being my preferred manner of construction, the same may nevertheless be modified in particulars within the scope of the claims annexed.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a mold, a wheel pattern having radi ally movable devices, and means for simultaneously projecting said devices to contact with the mold and center the pattern therein.
2. In a wheel mold. a chilling-ring, and means for centering the pattern within said ring.
In a mold, a car wheel pattern having radially movable devices for centering the pattern in the mold. and a longitudinally adjustable conical member in the center of said pattern for simultancmisly projecting said devices.
4. In a mold, a wheel pattern having radially movable devices, means for simultaneously projecting said devices to contact with the mold and center the pattern therein, and means for returning said devices within the margin of the pattern.
In a mold, a wheel pattern having radially movable pins, springs normally forcing said pins through the periphery of the pat.- tern, and a device at the center of the pattern for sin'iultaneously projecting said pins against the mold and centering the pattern therein.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES VVILSOW.
