To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WASHINGTON DANEN- HOWER, a citizen of the United States, residat Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Type-Washing Machines, of which the follow is a specification, reference being had to t e accompanying drawing.
My improvement relates to machines for washing printers type after such type has been used and has taken on accumulations of ink, dust, and other matter.
The object of the invention is to provide an apparatus by means of which considerable quantities of such type may beefiectively and rapidly cleansed and drained, the different sorts of type being kept separate from each other.
The present invention is an improvement u on the apparatus made the sub ect-matter 0 an. application filed by me in the United States Patent Office October 2-8, 1907, Serial No. 399,424.
The present invention adapts the apparatus for evaporation of wet adhering to the type and the interior the cylinder when the latter is raised the rinsing tank for drainage, in order at the type may not adhere to the inner faces of the cylinder walls or to each other when the washing'operation has been completed and it is desired to discharge the type.
In the accompanying drawin s, Figure 1 is a plan of an apparatus em odying my improvement; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same apparatus, a portion bein broken away; Fig. 3 is a perspective of t e apparatus when folded for storage or shipment.
Referring to said drawings, 1 is a tank member constituting the base of the machine, and 2 is a similar hollow member serving as a tank when the apparatus is in use and also as a top for the a paratus when the latter is not in use. Sai two members are joined to each other along adjacent free side edges by alternatin eye members, 3, located on said two mem ers and a pintle shaft, 4, extending through said eye members. Thus the tank member, 2, may be folded or turned over u on the tank member, 1, so that the two ot said members together constitute a box inclosin the cylinder, to be hereinafter described, w en the apparatus is not in use. To the side wall of the tank member, 2, which is opposite said hinge there is applied a cleansing solution, the shafti slotted hasp, 5, adapted to receive a loop, 6, on the corresponding wall of the tank member, 1, when the member, 2, rests upon said member, 1. By this means, the member, 2, is secured in the closed osition upon the member, 1. Each of saitf tank members, 1 and 2, is provided at one end, and near the bottom, with a faucet, 7 for the discharge of liquids from said members. Said tank members are preferably made of sheet metal of sufficient t ickness to bear the weight of the cylinder and the top carried by the cylinder during1 the washing operation. At the middle of t e upper edge of each end wall of the tank members, 1 and 2, is a notch or bearing, 9, preferably half-circular.
C is a hollow cylinder into which the type Y is placed for the washing 0 eration. Said cylinder comprises an axial s aft, 10, having at one end a crank, 11. In the perimeter of said cylinder are any desired number of doors, 12, opening into compartments for receiving various sorts of type for cleansing. As the structure of said cylinder does not diifer from the cylinder of my above-mentioned application; I deem it unnecessary to herein illustrate and describe said cylinder in detail. Portions of the walls of said cylinder are perforated to permit the passage of liquid, said perforations being smaller than the type to be washed.
The operation is as follows: A cleansing solution, for example a solution of lye, is put into one of the tank members, preferably the base member, 1, in order that said solution may be used repeatedly before being discharged from the faucet, 7. A rinsin liquid such as ordinary clean water, is placed into the other tank member. Unclean type is placed into the cylinder com artments throu h the orts, 12. The cylin er is then place into t e tank member containing the 10, resting in the bearings, 9. The cylin or is then rotated by turning the crank, 11. Such rotation moves the lower ortion of the cylinder, and the type in the ower compartments of the cylinder, through the cleansin liquid. When the cylinder as been rotate a sufiicient time for this portion of the operation, the cylinder is lifted out of the liquid and held above said liquid long enou h to ermit drainage back into said tan mem er. Then the cylinder is lifted over into the adjoining tank member, the shaft, 10, being placed in the bearings, 9, of that member.
Then the cylinder is similarl rotated until the liquid 111 said tank mem er completely rinses the type in the cylinder. Then the cylinder is raised and held over said tank member to permit the rinsing Water to drain therefronn To facilitate the shifting or transferring of the cylinder from one tank member to the other, a connecting bar or arm, 21, is applied to each end of the shaft, 10, and to the adjacent end of the pintle, 4, said bar having at each end a bearing, 22, to receive said shaft and said pintle. The distances between said pintle and the bearings, 9, of the tank members are equal. Hence the cylinder and the connecting arms may be together lifted from one tank member and turned into position on the other, the cylinder axis being carried through half circles of which the connecting arms aresradii. A supporting member or pro 23, is applied to each tank member beneat the bearing, 9. One end of said props is hinged to the end wall of the tank member at 24 while the opposite end of said rop is rovided with a notch, 25. When t e cylin er is raised for drainage, said prop is turned so as to bring the free end up, and the shaft, 10, is then allowed to descend and rest in said notch. In such position, the cylinder may be left any desired length of time for drainage. A stop, 26, is placed adjacent each prop, 23, to support the latter in the elevated position when the connecting arm, 21, is not used. To ermit the ready removel of the cylinder, C, fi'om the apparatus so that it may be carried to a table for filling and emptying, the connecting arms, 21, may be provided with a latch, 27, as shown in the drawings.
D is a hood having a top wall, 28, end walls, 29, and a side wall, 30. Said hood is a little longer than the length of the tank members, in order that it may extend partially over the tank member containing the rinsm liquid, the end walls, 29, lappin partia ly over the end walls of said tan member when the a paratus is in use, and entirely over the en walls of the two tank members when the apparatus is folded. Each end wall, 29, has a slot, 31, to receive the shaft of the cylinder when the ap aratus is folded as shown in Fig. 3, and the end wall, 29, which is to exten over the ends of the tank members having the faucets, 7, has notches, 32, to receive said faucets when the ap aratus is folded.
gVhen the a paratus is set for operation and the c lin er is raised into the osition shown in ig. 2 for draining water om the cylinder after rinsing in the adjacent tank member, the hood, D, is put into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the lower edges of the end walls, 29 and theside wall, 30, resting upon the table which supports the two tank members, and the end walls, 29, partially overlapping the ends of the cylinder and the adjacent tank member. Said hood and tank member together form an inclosure from which air may pass through the cylinder and into which air may pass through the slots or notches, 31 and 32, of the end Walls, 29, of the hood. A heating lamp or printers stove, 33, or any other desired form of heater, is placed within the hood. Said heater heats the air within said hood and said heated air moves through the cylinder and evaporates the wa er adhering to the surfaces of the type and the inner surfaces of the cylinder. Such evaporation eliminates the water which causes type to adhere to the inner faces of the cylinder walls. After a few rotations of the cylinder while said heated air is passing through the cylinder, such drying/is accom lished, and the type will then promptly disc arge by gravity when an open cy inder compartment is turned down.
I claim as my invention:
1. In an apparatus of the nature described, a tank provided with bearings, a hollow cylinder having journals adapted to rest in said bearings, mechanism for supporting said cylinder above said bearings, and a hood adapted to inclose a space beside said tank and partially cover sald cylinder when the latter is in the elevated position, substantially as described.
2. In an apparatus of the nature described, a tank provided with bearings, a hollow cylinder having 'ournals adapted to rest in said bearings, mec anism for supporting said cylinder above said bearings, and a hood adapted to inclose a space beside said tank and partially cover said tank and said cylinder when the latter is in the elevated position, substantially as described.
3. In an apparatus of the nature described, a tank provided with bearings, a hollow cylinder having journals adapted to rest in said bearin s, mechanism for supporting said cylinder a ove said bearings, and a hood adapted to inclose a space beside said tank and partially cover said tank and said cylinder when the latter is in the elevated position,

In an apparatus of the nature described, two tank members each rovided with bearings, a c linder having ournals adapted to rest in t e bearings of either of said tank members, mechanism for sup orting said cylinder above the bearings of one of said tanks, and a hood adapted to inclose a space beside said tank and artially cover said cylinder. in the elevate ositi'on and slide over said two tanks when tlie latter are folded upon each other, substantially as described.
5. In an apparatus of the nature described, two tank members each provided with bearings, a c linder having ournals adapted to rest in t e bearings 0 either of said tank members, mechanism for sup rting said cylinder above the bearings 0 one of said tanks, and a hood adapted to inclose a space beside said tank and artially cover said cylinder in the elevated osition and slide over said two tanks when t e latter are folded upon each other said hood having notches in its end walls, substantially as described.
