To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRIET N. LEGAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hooks and Eyes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hooks and eyes and more particularly in the hook and eye shown and described in my United States Patent No. 860,039, issued July 16 1907.
The object of the present invention is to provide the cooperative fastening members with separate appliances which, when in place, secure and house the pin points, which. firmly connect the parallel shanks of each. member and prevent their separation which aid in retaining the engaging portions of the two members in the interlocked position and which furthermore simplify the construction and in consequence lessen the cost of manufacture of the article. I attain this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated and in which Figures 1 and 8 represent respectively a plan and side view of the eye member, Figs. 2 and 4- respectively, a plan and side view of the hook member comprised in my invention, Figs. 5 and 7 respectively, a plan and side view of a modified construction of the eye member, Figs. 6 and 8 similar views of a modified construction of the hook member,

Both the hook member and the eye member are produced by bending a doubled piece of wire and respectively comprise an engaging portion 6 and a fastening element 7, the latter being identical in the two members and composed of two identical parallel mem bers 5 each of which comprises a shank 8 which connects with the engaging portion, a pin 11 which extending below and in a proximate parallel relation to the shan r, terminates in proximity to the said engaging ortion and a spring loop 10 intermediate the shank and the pin.
The engaging portion 6 of the hook memher is shaped to form a hook 12 and that of the eye member is produced by bending the middle portion of the wire in the form of a loop 13.
The portions of the doubled wire in the hook 12 extend parallelly in close proximity to each other and are separated at the points of junction of the hook with the two shanks 8, as illustrated in the drawings.
Instead of being connected by the coil 10, the shanks and pins may be brought in their relative positions by a single bend 9, as shownin Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive, which modified form is by reason of its simplicity, especially suited to the manufacture of the smaller sizes of my improved hooks and eyes.
At the points of junction of the engaging portion of each member with the respective shanks 8, I apply a link 14, which is composed of a flat strip of pliable metal, the ends of which are bent down and inwardly and curved at their extremities to form guards 15 for the rece tion of the points of the pins 11.
Each link is furthermore formed at the points of junction of its middle portion 16 and the downwardly ranging guards, with transversely disposed sleeves 1.7, designed. to admit and engage the shanks 8 of the hook or eye to which the link is applied. and which. are produced by cutting the ends of the article with a Ushaped tool and curving the cutout portions inwardly, towards the under surface of the said middle portion.
In the modified form of the link illustrated in Figs. 12 and 13, the downwardly extending ends of the link are divided by a central out and the portions 18 and 19 curved inwardly to respectively form the pin guards and the fastening sleeves.
The links are attached to the hook or eye by placing the flat shank 16 upon the upper surface of the shanks 8 at the juncture of the latter with the engaging portion 6 and bend ing the sleeves 17 around the said shanks, substantially as shown in Fig. 9 of the drawmgs.
The shanks 8 being thus connected, are firmly held against lateral displacement and the guards formed by the downwardly ranging, inwardly curved ends of the link are well adapted to house and shield the points of the pin 11 so as to retain them in their position on the garment and to prevent possible in jury to the wearer.
It will be observed that in addition to its other uses, the shank 16 of the link on the hook member, being disposed below the engaging portion 6, forms a safeguard against accidental unlocking of the eye member when the two members are in the interlocked position.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is A member of a hook and eye fastener com prising an engaging portion, parallel shanks extending therefrom, pins connected with the extremities of the shanks and terminating adjacent to the said engaging portion and I a link Whose middle portion extends over the shanks adjacent the engaging portion and HARRIET N.
