Serial No.
To all whom 'it muy con fern:
B'e it known that l, WILLIAM Ilmos, a citizen of the, llnitod Status, residing at Plano, in the, county ol" Kendall and State-of illinois, i have in vented new and useful In'iprovoments inCorn-Husking Machines, of which the following is n specification, refersncc heing hady to the accompanying drawii'igs, forming a part thereof.
This application is a division of my application Serial lilo. 354,013, tiled dan` 25, 1907. lt relatos to curtain portions ot' the husking 1 mechanism oi tho corn-gathering machins', and it consists of the features of construction shown and ilcsrribed as indicated in the claimsv I n thil drawings:----ll`igure1 a partly scctional sido elevation of a portion of a corngnthering machine rontaining the features constituting in v ilivsntion, suction boing mad(J in foro-ambiti.. planoy across the lower ond of thc onr--delivcring conveyor which is l not otlierwisrshown. Fig. .2 is a View loking in the dirmztion of tho arrows at the line 2 2 on Fig. l. Fig. Il is s. section at the lino Ile-3 ou Fig. 1.
The type oi' machine to which this invention relatos maybe understood as boing atwowheeled machine, tho position of one of the wheels lining indirz'iitrd in dotted line at 1 in Fig. l tho whebls not being oihcrwisc shown, the stalks boing engaged between gathering arms not shown and direclrd to snapping rolls, 3, 3, between which they are engagcdfor snapping ofT the ears, which nro thereupon carried up rearward along tho snapping rolls by mechanism not lshown and delivered from the upper rear und thereof into a downwardly and rearwardly inclined chute or guideway, 19, the bottom of which is l'ornicd by husking rolls. The features of tho present invention relato to tho husking rolls and devices asso-- eiated with them. These husking rolls, as illustrated, consist oi' two pairs of rolls, 4, 4, 4, 4. Each of said rolls is provided with longitudinal rows of pockets or recesses, 4, and intermediate them, rows of pins or studs, 5, which are preferably provided with expandodor dove-tailed heads and are adapted to enter the pockets of the adjacent rolls. These pins or studs may be formed of ordinary wood screws set in rows, having custonmry dia-meter to enter the Dockets, la and en a e 1. I g g with the husks so :is to secure their subse quent engagement between the two rolls, and so to elieot with greater certainty their dctachment from the ears. ln addition to the grooves and pins for engaging them, one of thc rolls of each pair may be provided Wit-h ribs, 6, 6, and the opposite roll of thc pair with corres onding grooves, 7, 7, to receivey the ribs and) thereby gri the husli more. securely tha-n they Woulr be gripped by thel smooth surfaces of the rolls, or each oi' the rolls of the pair may be rovided with a rib, 6, and s; groove, 7, the r1 and groove of one boing adapted to engage the groove and rih of theA other.
Another feature of the husliring mechanism i i constitutinY part of this invention consists in rctarding n evicos overhanging thc husking rolls to prevent the cars from sliding down. along the rolls so rapidly as to prevent en gagomcnt with the husks. devices consist of Weighted wings or flaps, 1U, which are hung upon rock shafts, 11, extend ing across the husking trou kh or chute, 19, o'f which the rolls form the Ottoni, in such position that the wings or fla s rest by gravity upon or against the hus in rolls when the trough is empty, and are adapted to bo swung or crowded ofi' thc rolls b the ears sliding down the latter, as seen in ig. 1. In order to adjust these retarding devices to revent them from too greatly retarding the lescaut of the oars and so causing an accumulation, the rock shafts, 11, are provided with stop collars, 12, Whose roje'cting fingers, 12, enga o under the weiglitcd flaps, l0, and lift the a s or swing them rearward oil thc rolls when t e shaftsl'arev rocked l'or that urposo. All the roclg shafts are also provi( ed with lever arms,y 13, loutside the trough, 19, and these lever arms'are connected b a link bar, 14, which beilg moved longitudinally rocks all the shafts, engaging the proj ccting lingers, 12, of the collars, 12, with the flaps or wings, 10, and lifting them all equally away from the huskin rolls to any degree found nocessa in or er to prevent undue rctardmcnt of he ears. When the husks are very heavy or groen. and tend to slide loss easily or nroquire more room than when they are scauty or very dry, the flaps, 10, will be adjusted to allow a little more. room for the cars. For this purpose, the link bar, 14, has a plurality of notches, 14, any one of which may ho c11- rlhese rctardingr gli gaged by the detent tooth, 15", of the bracket, 15, which is secured on the side of the trough, 19, such engagement holding the bar at an ostion to which it may be adjusted to a just the retarding wings or iiaps, 10.
1. In a corn husking machine, in combination with a descending chute for the detached ears and husking devices operating in said chute; wei hted flaps or wings pivoted over the chute or depending in the ath of the descending ears to retard their escent, and means for stopping said flaps short of the bott of the c lute, and means for adjusting sa'd stoppin devices to limit and vary the intrusion of t ne ilaps into the path of the ears along the chute.
2. In a cornl husking machine, in combination with a descending chu te for the detached ears; husking devices o erating in the bot?l tom of the chute; roc shaft extending across the chute and weighted aps or wings ivoted, thereon and dependin therefrom into the chute into the ath of t e descending ears to retard their escent; coperatin 'stops on the rock shaft and the Wings pivote thereon, for limiting the swinging movement ofthe flaps about t e shafts toward the path of the ears, and means for adjusting the shafts by rocking to limit the protrusion of the flaps into the path of the ears.
3. In a corn husking machine, in combination-With a descending chute for the. detached ears husking devices operating at the bottom of said chute; rock shafts extending wings into the path of the ears, and means for releasably securing said link bar at adjusted position.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Plano, Illinois, this 3 day of August, 1907.
WILLIAM HIBBS.
