HENRY C. HENO AND ROBERT GREENLEAF,
OE PITTSFTELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
CIRCLE-SAW.
Application filed March 21, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY C. HENO and ROBERT GREENLEAF, citizens of the United States, residing at Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful improvement in Circle-Saws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a circle saw and the object of the invention is a sawing machine by means of which circular woo en disks may be cut out such as bottoms of tubs, beaters, etc.
1t has heretofore been common to cut out by hand wooden disks which were too large to be handled by band saws, and from one to two hours is often required in order to out out one piece.
With our invention, a wooden disk having a diameter from six feet to eleven feet can be readily cut within a few minutes time and practically without the expenditure of any manual labor other than with that required to control an electric motor. The machine is also adapted for use in connection with wood bottoms several inches in thickness.
The invention consists of a truck, a portable sawing machine thereupon, and means for automatically moving said truck in a circle upon the material being operated upon.
In the accompanying drawingszfligure 1 is a side view of the machine, a portion of a Wooden bottom being shown in section. ig. 2 is an end view of the machine, a portion of the wooden bottom being shown in crosssection.
.ln these rialbeing operated B represents the truck,
drawings A represents the mateupon by the machine, and mounted upon the casters C. The truck is also mounted upon a wheel C which is fixed upon a shaft C2, said shaft being iournaled in the frame B.
A rod D is held in bearings D carried by the truck B and the rod D has its outer end portion clamped to a socket pin D2 by means of a set screw D2. The socket pin D2 is fitted into a recess provided for it in the true center of the disk to be cut.
An upright guide-frame E is carried at one end of the truck B and in said frame works a cross-head E which is moved vertically by a pitman E2 pivoted at its upper en to a Wheel E3. The lower end of the cross-head E carries a saw E4 which works through an angled gage E5, the gage being carried by the lower portion of the upright guide-frame E.
Specification of Letters Patent'.
The wheel E3 is mounted upon Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Serial No. 363,715.
a shaft ES EG and E7. the side of the upon which is fixed pulleys handle E is also fixed to guide-frame E.
A motor E of any suitable type is mounted upon the truck B and a belt F transmits rotary motion from the motor to the pulley E2. A belt G runs over the pulley E7 and also over the pulley G The pulley G is mounted upon a suitable worm shaft H', the worm to which engages a gear wheel H carried by the shaft, C2.
The operation of the above described parts are as follows 1-The diameter of the circle to be cut is fixed by the length of the rod D measuring the distance from the socket D2 to the saw E4. As soon as the motor is started the saw will be reciprocated through the movement of the cross-head E and pitman E2 and at the same time the truck B will commence its travel in a circle about the socket pin D2, the travel of the truck being caused by engagement o the gear H and the worm gear H The rotary motion transmitted from the motor to the shaft E8 is transmitted through the pulley E7, belt G, pulley G worm gear gear H, shaft C2, to the wheel C. Should the rate of travel at any time tend to exceed the cutting rate of the saw, it can be checked by the operator grasping the handle E2, upon which he is supposed to keep one hand during the operation of the machine. The motor can of course be started and stopped in the usual manner by arranging an electrical switch at any point convenient to the operator.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is a# 1. A device of the kind described comprising a truck adapted to move upon the work operated upon, a saw carried by said truck, means carried by the truck for reciprocating the saw and means for imparting a circular movement to the truck.
2. A circle saw of the kind described corn prising a truck, a reciprocating saw carried by the truck, means carried by the truck for reciprocating the saw, means for imparting positive motion to the truck, and means for guiding the truck about the center of the work being operated upon.
3. A device of the kind described comprising a wheeled truck, means for moving said truck in a circle, an upright carried by an end of the truck, a handle carried by said upright,
a driven Wheel carried by said upright, a pitman secured to the Wheel, and a saw blade connected to said pitman.
device of the kind described comprising a truck, a saw Carried by the truck, a socket pin, said pin' being carried by the Work operated upon by the saw, the said truck being also carried by said Work, e rod be purpose set forth.
