Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EZRA PERIN AND JOHN Z. PERIN, OF CONNERSVILLE, INDIANA.
HORSE-POWER MACHINE FOR CROSSCUT-SAWING.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,099, dated January 12, 1858.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, EZRA PERIN and Jol-1N Z. PEKIN, of Oonnersville, in the county of Fayette and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Sawing Machinery; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description o-f the construction and operation of the same, referenee being had to the annexed drawing, forming part 0f this specification, in which Figure 1 is a top view of the machine. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
Similar characters of reference in the several figures denote the same part.
The object of our machine is the sawing logs into short lengths. y
The nature of our invention consists in certain devices hereinafter to be set forth for reciprocating the saw and moving the machine along the log; the details being as follows:
In the drawing H is a horse power upon a frame F, mounted upon wheels W W for the purpose of moving. At the foot of the horse power is erect-ed an upright frame E, fro-m which extend two timbers a a', ccnstituting the ways of a slide piece O. This slide is reciprocated from the rotation of the foot shaft L of the horse power thro-ugh, bevel wheelsw fw', crank shaft c, pitman d, rock shaft r, and pitman e, pitman cl con necting crank f with arm g of rock shaft, and pitman e connecting arm of rock shaft with stud j of the carriage or slide piece C. This slide has two vertical guides k, in which move the side pieces of the saw frame A, so that asthe slide reciprocates the saW is also moved across the log. Its movement in the guides permits it to adjust itself as the depth of cut increases. The cords m serve to elevate the saw after the cut is completed.
The head shaft of the horse power has a roller m upon one extremity, and is capable of being slightly raised and lowered by lever L and rod R, for the purpose of moving the whole machine by contact of roller m with a rim `n of wheel W, so that when a cut is made the whole machine may be moved alo-ng the log the distance for the next out, by a simple movement of lever L, the horse continuing his work in the power. To move the machine the opposite direction band B is tightened by lever L.
The advantages of this machine are its portability and ease of operation, the machine being transported to the timber, and every operation performed by the horse which draws it.
Having described our invention and the operation thereof, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
l. The combination of the saw frame, and slide piece C, with the combination of devices communicating the motion of the horse power, arranged and operating as described.
2. We also claim, making the head shaft of the power movable vertically, and combining the same with roller m, rim n, lever and lifting piece for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto signed our names before two subscribing witnesses.
EZRA PERIN. JOHN Z. PERIN.
