To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. Hnwx- HU'RST, Jr., a citizen of the UnitedFStates, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have in-.
5 this specification, and represent, m-
Figure 1 a perspective view .of a box constructed in accordance with my invention and shown in the open position. Fig. 2 a side view of the same in the closed position.
Fig. 3 a plan view of the strip from which thebox is formed, showing the ends detached.
Figg i aperspective view of a. modified form of ox This invention relates to an improvement in confectioners box and %articularly to boxes for charlotte russe. oxes for-this purpose as usually constructed are cylinrical in form and slightly tapered with a separate bottom piece which is forced into the cylinder. They have also been made with a bottom formed integral with the sides and the ends of the side strip formed with slots and tongues whereby the ends maybe interlocked so as to form a knock-down box; but uniting the ends by tongue and slot connection does not make the box sufliciently rigid as pressure upon one edge of the box will'tend to unlock the ends.
The object of this invention is to produce a box especially adapted for charlotte russe which 1s formed from a single piece of material with the ends formed that it may venience' in shippmg, but which ma gued together and so e folded flat for copwithout difiiculty opened for use; an the invention consists. in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim. In carrying out my invention I preferabl form an octagonal box the'several sections 2 ofwhich are tapered and preferably rounded at their upper edges, and the section 3 at oneend formed with a tongue 4 which overlaps and is adapted to be secured to the other end section 5. rFormed integral with the strip and as an extension of oneof the sections as 6- is a bottom 7 octagonal in form the sides corresponding-to the sections of theside. This bottom cuts into the sections adjacent to the section 6 and is scored as at 8 so that'when folded on the score line the bottom will stand in the plane above the plane of the lower edge of the sides.
The bottom corresponds in shape to the shape of the box, that is, it has as many sides as there are sides to the box, and as shown, the size of the bottom is slightly greater than the size of the lower edge .of the box. This bottom when folded up as-shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, permits the sections to be close together as indicated in that figure so that the box is perfectly flat and therefore conveniently ship ed. When re uired for use the sides are s ightly separated and the bottom 7 forced down which moves the sections into their proper position and provides an octagonal box. Preferably and as shown the score 8 will be continued across the sev- 'eral sections of the box so as to form a groove into which the edge of the bottom may be forced, thus securely holding the bottom which, however, will generally. remain in place as the lower edge of the box is smaller in dimensions than the dimensions of the bottom.
While I prefer a box having eight sides, it is apparent that the box might have any number of sides provided only that the mim her be an even number so that the box can be folded together; thus as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, I have illustrated a box having four sides, or it might have six, or ten, or any other even number. I thus .produce a box which conforms to its shapeat once and is bottom formed integral with one ofthe side In testimony whereof, I have signed this I sections extending from a point within the lower edge of the strip, said bottom being larger than the bottom edge of the box and 5 adapted to be turned upward between the Witnesses:
