To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CnARLEsCuNo, a citizen of the United States, residing at ()conomowoc, in the county of \Vaukeshaand State of l/Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric- Circuit Controllers for lnternaLCombustion Engines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
This invent-ion relates to improvements in circuit controllers for internal combustion engines, and more particularly to an improved timer, so-ca'lled, whereby the primary circuit of an induction coil apparatus employed for ignition systems is opened and closed at the proper time.
The main object of the invention is to improve the construction, whereby the parts of the timer are easily and eilectively assembled and adjusted, said construction being very reliable and effective.
In the accompanying drawings,'Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention; Fig. 3 in the main, a. cross section on the plane of the line of Fig. 1.
In that-particular form. of my invention shown in the drawings, the timer, so-called. is adapted to control a circuit leading to four primary coils (not shown), although the number of coils employed vis immaterial.
l is a ring of insulating material, carrying blocks 2 2, which are insulated from each other and connected respectively with bind- 5 ing posis'33. These binding posts are carried by the ring 1 or a covering 1, which, if of conducting material, should be insulated from the binding posts washers 55. The covering 4 may constitute a. part of an iuclosing case, including the back 4 andthe hub at, and theremovable cover a detachably mounted and held to the back at in any suitable manner, as by ,screwbolts i and thumb-nuts 4. \ One end of this lever 10 carries a contact roll '11,, while the other end is connected by a spring 12 to the arm 9. The effect of the spring 12 is to force the roll 11 outwardly. into contact with the inner wall of the ring 1 and the contact blocks 2-2. This contact roll 1-1 is preferably beveled at its periphery, and each of the blocks 2 2 is correspondinglybevel'ed to receive-the same so asrto produce rubbing action between the :two parts when they meet. The insulating ring 1 is preferably slightly grooved, as indicated in dotted lines Fig. 1, to receive the extreme edge of the periphery of the contact roll 11. Y
Theshaft 8 may be secured in any desired manner to the driving shaft 14, which, in an ordinary four-cycle engine, rotates in;v time with the cam shaft (not shown).
As will now be seen, the case carrying the contact blocks 2 is supported at opposite sides upon the shaft 8. These bearings are located respectively on opposite sides of the hub 9 and the associated parts, with the result that the strain occasioned by the spring 12 is balanced. End play may be prevented by setting up on the adjusting nut (i, thisin turn cooperating with the antifriction bearings in any suitable manner. \Vhen the desired adjustment is secured, the nut 6 may be locked in' place in any wellkuown manner, forv example, by a screw 6 mssing through the flange on the head of the nut and engaging with the hub 45*. By this means the case is mounted to rotate in a most effective manner, end-play and wabbling, due to wear, being entirely eliminated. The anti-friction hearings in this instance being ball-bearings, may be provided with the usual ball races or retainers, Well known in the art, and to which I lay no claim of novelty. In a device of the character described, a shaft, a contact arm carried thereb', a contact carried by said arm, means for orcing said contact outwardly, a case surrounding said shaft, arm and contact, part of said case being removable, bearings between said case and said shaft and arranged on opposite sides of the' contact arm to balance the strain thereof, insulated contactblocks car? ried by said case and arranged in the path of the contact device, external terminals for said blocks and means external to said case for adjusting said bearings.
3. In a device of the character described, a case,a contact block carried thereby, a shaft supporting said case, a contact device carried'by said shaft and arranged to traverse said block, bearings between said shaft and case on opposite sides of the contact device, carried by the shaft, and means for adjusting said bearings accessible from the outer side of the case.

In a timer orcircuit breaker, a rotatable shaft, a contact device carried thereby and means for pressing the same outwardly relatively thereto, a case mounted on said shaft and inclosing said contact, a contact block carried by said case in the path of movement of said contact on the shaft, antifriction bearings carried by said case and arranged between said case and said shaft andon opposite sides of the contact device carried thereby, and a device adjustably carried by said case and cooperating with said ant-itriction bearings for m'ljustmcnt.
