Be it known that I, JOHN RALPH SURRELL, a subject of Great Britain, residing at the borough of Manhattan of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Boiler-Furnace, of which the following is a specificaboiler.
The objects of my invention are to provide a boiler furnace which can be readily attached to astcam boiler; by which heated Water may be supplied to the steam boiler; by 'Which a high'prcssurc of dry stcau'i may be maintained in the boiler: by which comsaving of fuel is attained, and for which plete combustion of the fuel may be obtained with the extraction of a great degree of heat thercfrou-i, without smoke and without conibustiblegases, except in slight. measure when the furnace is first hghtedrby which great only a limited chimney draft is required. sufli'cien't to carry oil' the smoke when first lighted and subsequently to carry otf the non-combustible gases. I attain these objectsby the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure. 1 is'a central longitudinal section (Id the line 1-4 of Fig. 2. My boiler furnace comprises a fuelfreceptacie, 10, Fig. 1, which may have Water cooled sides or cooled by any suitableform of coolin It is preferably cylindrical in form an arranged upon a suitable founda-' tionin' conjunction with a steam boiler. The fuel receptacle, 10, is open at the top, adapted to be fed vvith fuel at that, point, is provided with opening and closing covers for the top,
'29, clinker doors 3(), conveniently arranged in the sides, a grate 31, and anash pit 32, having suitable doors for the removal of ashes.
Centrally placed within the fuel receptaple 10, and surrounded by the fuel is a feed Water heater having a cylindrical base 11, restingupon the same foundation as the fuel receptacle but not communicating with the ash pit. thereof. The base, 11, is open at its top and an annular collar, 12, is attached vto the upper end of the base, 11, and connected with a. water supply, '13. Water pipes, 14. are affixed at their lower ends to the annular collar, 12, and at their upper ends-t0 a second or upper annular collar, 15. and. so connected to allow the passage oi water from the lower annular collar, 12, to the upper annular collar 15. The water pipes l-lare arranged in the annular collars 12 and 15 to allow the passage of heat and flame betwen them from the fuel receptacle 10, the-interior space resulting from their circular disposition in the annular collars forming the heat chamber 16, of the feed water heater. .The upper annular collar 15 is conncctcd with thewatcr space of the steam boiler by pipes 17 and 18. A hood 19 which nu-1y be water cooled or otherwise suitably cooled, is carried from'thc upper annular collar 15 to the face of the steam boiler in such manner as to inclose the heat tubes of the steam boiler. A stcanrnozzle 20 connected with the steam boiler, or an outside steam supply,'is inserted into the base 11 of the feed water heater, extending upward into the heat chamber 16 to a point slightly above the annular collar 12. The basell of the feed water heater is provided with a damper chamber 21 having a regulating door 22, the damper chamber having no com munication with the ash pit of the fucl-receptacle. A heat case 24, Figs. 1, 6 and T,
which may be Water cooled or by any suitable form of cooling. is placed around the steam boiler, arranged, F igs. l and 6. so that the heat. from the heat chamber of the feed water heater first passes through the boiler tubes and thence around and under the boiler to the chimney.
Fig. 7 shows a modified form designed to pass water heater first under the boiler and thence around and through the tubes to the chimney. The heat case, 24,'has at its rear end from the heat chamber of the fced llt heater, the doors ol the ash pit being kept :1V damper door, 25.
