UNITED T OFFICE.
FREDERIGH BAUMGARTNER, OF FAIRVIEW, PENNSYLVANIA, ADMINISTRATOR OF ERNEST BAUMGARTNER, DECEASED, ASSIGNOR TO EXOELSIOR GARDEN TOOL COMPANY, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
CULTIVATOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ERNEST BAUMGARTNER, late a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairview, county of Erie, and State of Pennsylvania, deceased, for whose estate I, Fnnnnni'oir BAUMGARTNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairview, county of Erie, and State of Pennsylvania, am administrator, did invent new and useful Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cultivators and consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof as will be hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims.
The invention is in a nature of an improvement upon the cultivator set forth in the patent to Daniel Mott, dated Oct. 28th, 1894:, No. 525,054L.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing as follows: Figure 1 shows a section on the line 1-1 in Fig. 3. Fig. 2 a perspective view of the shovel holding device. Fig. 3 a plan view of the cultivator with the improvements in place. Fig. 4: is an enlarged perspective view of the shovel holding device.
1 marks the axle of the cultivator; 2 the wheels and 3 the handles. Extending rearwardly from the axle are the arms at. These terminate in the heads The heads are provided with a slotted face 6 to which the shovel adjusting mechanism is secured. The shovel 7 is carried by the shank 8 and is adjustably secured to the swivel piece 9. For this purpose the shank extends through the swivel piece and has the nut 10 screwed on it. By this means the shovel plate may be adjusted as in the patent above referred to.
An eye bolt 11 extends around the swivel piece through the slotted face 6, and a nut 12 is screwed onto theend of the eye bolt.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 29, 1907.
Patented Oct. 20, 1908.
Serial No. 404,463.
A clamping piece 13 is arranged between the face 6 and the swivel piece 9. It is of the same general construction as the swivel piece shown in the patent above referred to.
WVith the construction shown in the patent, difliculty has been encountered in exerting sufiicient clamping action on the swivel piece to prevent the shovel from moving out of adjustment. The purpose of this invention is to obviate this diflicutly.
The swivel piece 9, is provided with corrugations 14, which extends axially along the swivel piece.
The clamping piece has the concave face 15. This face is preferably of slightly less radius than the swivel piece 9, so that the ends 16 of the clamping piece 18 bite into the corrugations 14 as the clamp is set, thus making the engagement positive under all conditions of use.
What is claimed as new is:
In a cultivator the combination with the rearwardly extending arm, having the slotted head; the swivel piece 9 having the'corrugations 14 extending axially thereon; a shovel plate carried by the swivel piece; the eye bolt extending around the swivel piece and into the slotted head; a clamping piece 13, having the concave face 15 of less radius than the radius of the swivel piece, whereby the ends 16 of the concave face will enter into the grooves formed by the corrugations for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICH BAUMGAR'INER, Administrator of the estate of Ernest Baumgartner, deed.
Witnesses:
H. O. LORD, J. R. CRAIG.
