To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP FERRER, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tape Reels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tape reels and its novelty consists in the construction and adaptation of the parts as is more specifically hereinafter pointed out.
A reel of the kind referred to is described in Letters Patent of the United States No. T 02,439, issued to Vilhelm Keuli'el, June 17 th, 1902. In the manufacture of such reels it has been found quite difficult to make the axial post of correct length, in order to regulate the tension upon the center or drum. Owing to the spring in the steel, of,which the tape is composed, the tape will at times cause the center to rotate backward with great force. The tension must, therefore, be correctly adjusted. Variations in the thickness of the leather of which. the case is composed will vary the distance between the plates and the drum cylinders may vary somewhat. If the distance is a little greater than usual the holding screw will sometimes rotate in the wrong direction when the tape is being unwound from the reel and the whole device will come to pieces, and the tape may be caused to rotate backward, as above referred to. Various .means have been tried for adjusting the length of the axial post and securing it against displacement, but none known to me have been satisfactory until the device hereinafter described was invented. This consists in brief in providing a supplementary sleeve which is adapted to engage the holding screw to prevent its displacement and at the same time to regulate the effective length of the axial post and the distance between the side plates of the tape drum.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central section through a tape reel embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the drum and related parts on the plane of the line 2 2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan View of a tape reel embodying a modified form of my invention, and Fig. 4 is a central section of the same along the longitudinal axis of the handle.
In the drawings, 1 is the case made preferably of leather, or thin metal covered with In the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2, 6 is the tape drum comprising a hollow cylinder, having secured to it, or made integral therewith, a pla-te 7 to which is hinged a flat link 3 having a handle 9 projecting therefrom. The parts are so arranged that the handle 9 will fall within the drum cylinder when the fiat link 8 is rotated on its hinge. 10 is an axial post secured to, or made integral with, the plate 7 forming one of the end members of the tape drum. This post is externally threaded at 11 and is provided with a longitudinal recess 12 which is internally threaded at 13, the threads 11 being liner than the threads 13. The axial post is of lessv length than the diameter of the drum cylinder 6 and is provided with a supplementary sleeve 2O which is internally threaded at 21 to engage the external threads 13 and which has a slit 22 whereby it may be engaged by a screw driver or similar tool.
30 is the second side plate of the drum cylinder. It has an annular flange 31 adapted to engage the bearing 4 and is centrally apertured to admit of the passage of ascrew 32, which engages the internal threads 11 of the post 10.
By this construction in assembling the parts, the cylinder G is first placed in posi.- tion in the case 1, the sleeve 20 is engaged with the post 10 until an approximately proper effective length is secured, the plate 30 is then put into place and the screw 32 inserted, and when the latter is tightened all of the parts are in their properl relation, the sleeve 20 serving as a jam nut to prevent the screw 32 from rotation with respect to the post 10.
In Figs. 3 and 4 is shown a tape reel embodying a modified form of my invention in which the drum cylinderl 6 is provided with a transverse member 60 internally threaded at 61 to receive the axial post 10 which is externally threaded at 100 and which is provided with a slit 101 by which it may be engaged by a screw driver and an expanded head 102 to engage with the bearing 4 within which it rotates. In these figures the supplemental sleeve 20, internally threaded at 21 and having` the slit 22, is adapted to engage with the threaded axial post 10 and to bear against the member 60 of the drum 6 to prevent the post from rotating atterI its ett'ective length has been adjusted. In these figures the drum cylinder is relatively small in diameter and the plate 7 extends over beyond the case. The principles ot' construction and mode of assembly and operation are the same as in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

In a tape reel, a case provided with bearings, a rotative tape drum having walls mounted in said bearings, and means for adjustably connecting said walls together and holding them ixedly in adjusted position, comprising elements which adjustably engage each other and respectively project from said walls and means whereby said elements are held in adjusted position.
2. In a tape reel having a tape drum adapted to rotate and provided with an axial post, means for varying the effective length of the post., comprising ak sleeve adjustably secured to the post and means adapted to prevent its displacement after adjustment.
8. In a` tape reel having a tape drum adapted to rotate and provided with an axial post, means for varying the effective length otl the post, comprising threads on the post, a threaded sleeve adapted to engage therewith and means tor limiting the position ot' the sleeve.

In a tape reel having a rotatable tape drum adapted to revolve in bairings,and provided with members adapted to engage such bearings, means adapted to hold the engaging members comprising a threaded axial post secured to one member, a threaded member cooperating therewith secured to the other member, and means adapted to vary the distance between said members and to prevent such variation after adjustment.

In a tape reel having a rotatable drum adapted to revolve in bearings, and provided with members adapted to engage such bearings, means adapted to hold the engaging members comprising a threaded axial post secured to one member, a threaded member cooperating therewith secured to the other member, a sleeve adapted to cooperate with the post and threaded member to prevent their relative movement after adjustment.
7. In a tape reel having a rotatable tape drum adapted to revolve in bearings, and provided with members adapted to engage such bearings, means adapted to hold the engaging members comprising an axial post provided with internal threads secured to one member and a cooperating part provided with external threads secured to the other member, and means for preventing the relative movement of the threaded parts after adjustment.
8. In a tape reel having a rotatable tape drum adapted to revolve in bearings, and provided with members adapted to engage such bearings, means adapted to hold the engagingl members comprising an axial post provided with external threads and internal threads secured to one member and an external sleeve provided with internal threads adapted to engage with the external threads ofthe post.
9. In a tape reel having a rotatable tape drum adapted to revolve in bearings, and provided with members adapted to engage such bearings, means adapted to hold, the
engaging members comprising` an axial post provided with external threads and internal threads secured to one member, a coperating part provided with external threads secured to the other member and an external sleeve provided with means for preventingl the relative movement of the threaded parts.
10. In a tape reel having a rotatable tape drum adapted to revolve in bearings, and provided with members adapted te engage such bearings, means adapted to hold the engaging members comprising an axial post provided with external threads and internal threads` secured to one member, a coperating part provided with external threads secured to the other member and an external sleeve provided with means for preventing the relative movement of the threaded parts, consisting of internal threads on. the sleeve adapted to Vengage the external threads on the post.
11. In a tape reel having a rotatable tape drum adapted to revolve in bearings, and provided with members adapted to engage such bearings, means adapted to hold the engaging members comprising an axial post provided with external threads and internal threads secured to one member, the internal threads being coarser than the external threads, a cooperating part provided with external threads secured to the other member and an external sleeve provided with internal threads adapted to engage with the external threads of the post.
