Description

tant- @met THOMAS J. MELL, OF MACON, GEORGIA.
Letters Patent No. 90,181, dated May 18, 1869.
RAILROAD-CAR VENTILATOR.
Nro- The Schedule referred tol in these Letters Patent and making part of the lam To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. MELL, of the city of' Macon, in the county of Bibb, and State of Georgia, have invented a new and improved Ventilator ,for Railroad-Cars, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the mitte make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to a new and useful' 'tion of a passenger-car, with my ventilating-device attached.
In this case the letter A represents the dampers, which'work between the ribs of the roof of the oar.
The said dampers are all secured to an iron rod, B, which runs the whole length of the car, and is operated upon by means of a cord, chain, or wire, C, passing over or around .the same, and extending therefrom to such piace or places in the car as may be deemed most convenient, so that, by pulling the said cord, chain, or wire suiiciently to give the` rod on which the dampers are set a half turn, the whole car may be ventilated from end to end at the highest point in the roof.
The top of the car is left open between the ribs, and the cap or hood D is firmly secured to the said ribs, which are correspondingly shaped so as to receive the same, and allow the lap of the cap or hood D to extend downward beyond the opening in the top of the car, so as to prevent leakage or cinders from entering the car through the ventilator, and will be made ornamental, so as to give the car a handsome inish on top.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The ventilator A, on the rod B, operated by the cord, chain, or wire O, in combination with the hood or cap D, the whole being set, arranged, and operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein shown and described.
