To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,` ALLAN MoIsAAo, a citizen of the' United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements `in TrOlley-VVire Anchors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an overhead trolley wire construction, and more particularly to an anchor for the trolley wire whereby the latter is securely supported on cross wires, arms or the like.
The invention has for one of its objects to improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character so as to be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, thoroughly reliable in use, and composed of relatively few parts.
A further objectof the invention is the provision of an anchor comprising a body having a longitudinal groove in its top for receiving the trolley wire, which latter.is secured in position by end clamping members that directly engage the wire and a central bridge piece also arranged to directly engage the wire.
With these objects in view and others, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one of the embodiments of the invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of the anchor with the trolley secured therein. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view on line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. l is a transverse section through one of the clamping members on line 4 4, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the end clamping members.
Similarl reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the body of the anchor which is preferably a metal casting that is of elongated shape and provided with a central depending rib l that has a straight bottom edge disposed flush with the bottom edge of those portions of the trolley wire 2 extending oppositely from the anchor, the said rib forming virtually a continuation of the trolley wire so that the trolley wheel can pass under the anchor without obstruction and noise. In the top surface of the body A is a longitudinal groove 3 that dips adjacent the extremities of the body so that the trolley wire or conductor 2, which is seated in the groove, will lie flush with the rib l. Disposed at opposite sides of the groove 3 are parallel ribs 5 rising from the body of the anchor and each rib is cut away at 6 for receiving a bridge piece 7. This bridge piece is provided with apertures 8 that aline with threaded apertures in the anchor body A, and the bridge piece is secured in position by bolts 10 extendinginto the said apertures. Depending from the bottom of the bridge piece 7 is a tongue 11 which extends into the groove 3 and bears on the top of the trolley wire so as to clamp the latter firmly to the anchor as the bolts 10 are drawn home. Disposed at opposite sides and spaced from the rib 1 are depending webs 1Q. that serve to prevent the trolley wheel from becoming displaced while passing under the anchor, and projecting laterally from the anchor body are flanges 13 that are provided with apertures 14 for receiving cross wires of the overhead construction, whereby the anchor is held in position. The anchor may be further secured in position by means of a fastening adapted to be screwed into the internally-threaded boss 15 on the bridge piece 7.
The trolley wire is clamped to the anchor' adjacent the ends thereof by clamping members 16 which slide vertically in bosses 1.7 preferably formed integrally on the body of the anchor and each provided with a slot 18 for receiving the clamping member 16. Each boss 17 is externally threaded for receiving a nut 19, the bottom of which bears against the shoulders or abutinents 20 provided on the clamping piece. The bottom of each clai'nping member 16 is inclined to correspond to the dip of the groove 3 at the ends thereof and is also of V-shaped cross section as indicated at 21, Figs. 4 and 5, so as to straddle the trolley wire and effectively grip the same.` By screwing the nut 19 downwardly, it forces the clamping member tightly into engagement with the trolley wire so that the wire will be clamped in the groove of the anchor body. These approximately T-shaped clamping members can be readily removed, as can also; the
bridge piece when it is desired to take off the trolley Wire for any purpose.
The anchor' is of simple-durable,and sub,.- stantial construction and is highly effect-ive in operation. y
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying draw-` ing, the advantages of the constru,ctiony and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to Which the invention appertains, and While I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together ivith the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desred as are Within the scope of the claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is l. A trolley Wire anchor comprising a body having in its top a longitudinal groove inclined downwardly at its end s and provided With a central rib at its bottom, a horizontal plate-like bridge piece having a tongue extending into the groove, bolts` for removably securing the bridge piece to the body, bosses rising from the body adjacent the ends thereof and' having slots disposed in line With the groove, clamping members slidably mounted in the slots inl the bosses and extending into the groove, and means on the bosses for holding the said' pieces in clamping position.
2. A trolley Wire anchor comprising a body having a longitudinal? groove for' re ceiving` the trolley Wire, a plate-'like bridge' piece removably secured to the center ofy the body andi having a depending tongue on its bottom side extending into the longitudinal groove of the latter for clamping the Wire in position and also having a threaded: boss rising from the top sideffor connection with, a supporting means, and clamping devices adjacent the ends of the body for clamping the Wire in position, said devices each consisting of a threadedfmember, a nut on the member, and a slidably mountedy clamping piece guided on the member and having abutments. with which the nut engages.
A trolley Wire anchor consisting of a body provided With a longitudinal groove in its top, a longitudinal rib in the. bottom thereof, aperturedflanges extending laterally from the body, a bridge piece secured to the top of the body, a tongue on the bottom of the bridge piece extending into the groove for engagement With the trolley Wire, means on the bridge piece for attachment to a support, exteriorly threaded bosses rising from the body adjacent the ends thereof, clamping members guided on the bosses, and nuts on the bosses for holding the members in clamping.position.
