SWITCH-LAMP HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. EDMUNDS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of West Nyack, county of Rock land, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switch-Lamp Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in switch lamp holders and particularly to an adjustable lamp holder arranged to be employed in connection with a switch stand,
the adjustment permitted being such as to cause the lamp to be held vertically regardless of whether or not the switch stand itself is truly vertical.
It often happens that the switch stand is not truly vertical, and in such cases, the beam of light thrown by a signal lamp carried thereby is deflected from the path it should assume. A comparatively slight deflection seriously affects the efficiency of the lamp as a signal and it is the object of my present invention to provide means whereby the holder may be readily adjusted so as to compensate for any deflection of the switch stand from the vertical position.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will now proceed to describe an embodiment thereof having reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating the same and will then point out the novel features in claims.
Figure 1 is a view in vertical elevation of a switch stand holder and lamp, the holder being constructed in accordance with my invention and shown as adjusted so as to straighten the lamp with respect to the switch stand. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front view of the lamp holder showing the same detached from the switch stand. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation thereof. Fig. 1 is an under side view thereof. Fig. 5 is a detail View in perspective of a swinging frame piece employed. Fig. 6 is a detail view of a portion of one of the lamp carrying arms.
Fig. 7 is a view perspective of a modified form of lamp carrying member employed.
In general the lamp holder comprises a main supporting or socket member 10, a swinging frame piece 11 adjustably mounted thereon, and a lamp carrying device comprising a pair of arms 12 pivotally secured upon the frame piece and the socket member. The socket member comprises a central hub 13 having a squared recess 14: which is fitted to a correspondingly squared portion at the upper end of the post 24% of a switch stand 25. Extending from the hub upon opposite sides thereof are studs 15-15 and upon opposite sides at right angles thereto are other studs 16--16. The swinging frame piece 11 surrounds the said hub 13 and is provided with slots 17 for receiving the studs 15 and with other slots 18 for receiving the studs 16. Between the studs 16 and the central hub portion of the socket member 10 are shouldered portions or bosses 19 which are somewhat accurately fitted to the said frame piece, or in other words the distance between the extremities of the shouldered portions 19 is substantially equal to the distance between the inner walls of the said frame piece. On the other hand, there are no such bosses or shouldered portions between the central hub 18 and the studs 15 so that the said hub and frame piece will be capable of movements in a line with the axis of the studs 15, but will have no such movements in line with the axis of the stud 16. The upper ends of the slots 18 in the frame-piece 11 are widened out as shown at 20 (see particularly Figs. 2 and 5 of the drawings), and the upper wall of the said widened portion 20 is curved. Preferably, the widened portions 20 of the said slots are substantially arcs of circles Whose centers are at points beneath the center of said frame work but in lines which pass centrally through the vertical portion of the said slots 18.
The lamp carrying device, which has been said to comprise the pair of arms 1212, includes disks 21-21 connected to the base of said arms, the said disks having orifices therethrough by means of which they may be threaded upon the extending studs 15. These disks are then secured fast against the outer side walls of the frame piece by means of nuts 22 which are fitted to the said studs, the'inner surfaces of the disks 21, and the outer co-acting surfaces of the frame piece walls being roughened so as to increase the frictional hold between the parts whereby to prevent slippage.
By unscrewing one of the nuts 22 and screwing up the other one, it will be seen that the effect will be to adjust the frame piece bodily from one side to the other of the socket member, but in so doing, owing to the shape of the widened portion 20 of the slots 18, the tendency will be for the said frame piece to tip with respect to the socket member. By this means, the frame piece 11 and the lamp carrying arms 12-12 may be adjusted in one plane with respect to the central socket member as will be readily seen. After the said frame piece has been properly adjusted, the nuts 22 may be tightened so as to properly secure the parts in place and similarly nuts 23, with which the studs 16 are provided, may also be tightened.
In order to adjust the lamp carrying device in a vertical plane at right angles to the vertical plane of adjustment just described, the arms 12 and disks 21 may be swung about their pivotal support upon the studs 15.. This will be done, of course, while the nuts 22 are slackened and the said nuts will be tightened again after the proper adjustment has been made. lVhile this adjustment is being made, the nuts 23 will be kept tightened so as to prevent accidental movements meanwhile between the frame piece and the socket member.
. The lamp 26 is shown in Fig. l as supported by means of the arms 12 and this is a common form of lamp and lamp support but there is another form of lamp which has a squared socket in the base thereof by means of which the lamp may be directly received by the squared end of the post 24. hen this form of lamp is employed, I provide a lamp carrying device of the form of character shown in Fig. 7 in which the uprising arms are brought together and united to form a squared shank as is shown at 27 in Fig. '7, the said shank being the proper size and shape to be received within the lamp socket.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that when a lamp socket of thisdescription is employed, adjustment may be readily made therein to bring the lamp to a vertical position regardless of the position of the switch stand.
hat I claim 1s: 1. A switchlamp holder comprising a central hub or supporting member, a frame piece carried thereby and a lamp carrying device in engagement with said frame piece, the said holder being provided with means for adjusting the frame piece with respect to the hub in a vertical plane and with means for adjusting the lamp carrying device with respect to the frame piece in a vertical plane at right angles to the first said plane of adjustment.
2. A switch lamp holder comprising a central hub having two pairs of oppositely arranged studs projecting therefrom, a frame piece fitted around the said hub and provided with openings for receiving the said studs, a lamp carrying device pivotally mounted upon one pair of the said oppositely disposed studs, nuts upon the last said studs for securing the said lamp carrying device against the frame piece and nuts upon the other pair of studs for locking the frame piece to the central hub.
3. In a. switch lamp holder, the combination with a central hub having a recess for receiving the end of a switch post and provided with a pair of oppositely arranged bosses and studs extending therefrom, and with another pair of studs extending from the said central hub at right angles with the first said studs, of a frame piece arranged to surround the said central hub and provided with openings for receiving the said studs, the openings for receiving the first pair of studs having enlarged upper ends to permit lateral movements in one direction of the said hub within the said frame piece, a lamp carrying device comprising disk portions and uprising arms, the disk portions being adapted to be mounted upon the second pair of said studs, and nuts upon both said pairs of studs for permitting adjustments of the various parts and for securing them in their adjusted positions.
