LIGHTNING-ARRESTER?.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB B. STnULE1'e siding at 7ilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, a citizen of the United States, haveinvented or discovered certain new and useful lImprovements in Lightning-Arresters, of which improvement the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to Specification of Letters Patent'. Application led. December 10,1906. Serial No. 347,092.
certain improvements in lightning arresters and has for its object the provision of a case or shell for inclosinvr the elements of the arrester, consisting of means between which an arc can be formed, an arc dampener and terminals so constructed as to permit of the easy insertion and removal of said elements, and provided with one or more adjustable contacts.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a sectional plan view of my improved construction; Fig. Q is a sectional elevation on a plane indicated by the line II-II Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a top plan View of a modified form; Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of the same; Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation of a further modificationi and Fig. 6 is a section on a plane indicated by the line VI--VI Fig. 5.
In the practice of my invention the case or shell 1 is formed of porcelain rubber or other suitable insulating material, and is provided with suitable means such as flanges Q, whereby the shell may be secured to a suitable support. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and '2, the case or shell is constructed to entirely inclose the lightning arrester, an opening being formed in the Tower end ofl the case for the insertion of the arrester elements. This opening in the lower end is closed by a cover or cap 3 also formed of insulating material and secured in position by any suitable means as cement as shown. A. vent or opening 4 is provided preferably in the cover 3 as shown in Fig. Q. The arrester element consists of a body 5 of suitable material such as pulverized carbon and a binder as silicate of soda having sufficient resistance to damp the arc and having on opposite sides contact plates 6, one of which is adapted to electrically connect with one of the circuit terminals extending out through the case or shell as hereinafter described. and a metal plate 84 against which the terminal will bear. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, this plate 8 may` be formed by the head of one of the terminals.
Holes are formed in the walls of 'the case or shell for the passage of the terminals 9, provided at their inner ends with heads 10 adapted to bear upon the contactplates of the arrester. These terminals may be removably secured in the side 'wallsof the shell or case as shown in Figs. 1 and 9., in. which case the cont-act port-ions of the arrester element are provided with resilient portions a which are forced into contact with the heads 10 when the element is placed in position, the element being retained in the shell by the cover 3. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the terminals may be adjustably secured in position, they being screwed into a sleeve 11 provided with a head and projecting into the opening in the wall of the shell. The terminal and sleeve are locked in position by a nut 12.
In Figs. 3 and 4 is shown a construction which can be employed, Where the complete inclosure of the combined dampener and spark gap, is not necessary or desirable. In this form the shell is constructed with an open top, so that the shell has a socket form, into which the combined dampener and gap are inserted. In order to prevent dirt lodging within the case or shell, an opening for the escape thereof is formed in the bottom of the shell.
Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate a modification of the construction shown in Figs. 1 and Q. The shell or case is constructed to entirely inclose the arrester, the opening in its lower end or base being closed by a. vented cover or lid 3, which as in the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is secured in position by any suitable means, preferably cement..
The terminals 9a are inserted through openings in the top of the shell, and vare electrically connected inside of the shell to the contact plates of the arrester by conducting strips 13 and 14 preferably in grooves in the side walls of the shell. One of the walls of the shell is provided with a project-- ing seat 15 for the inner end of one of the conducting strips between which and the contact plate 16 of the damping member of the arrester is interposed a perforated sheet 17 of mica having a thickness proportional to the resistance desired in the arrester. The other conducting strip is electrically con -nectied to a contact. plate of the dampingmember by a screw 18 and nut 19. As shown the screw passes through the Wall of the shell, the conducting strip 14 and the nut, which is held from turning by lugs .20 on the conducting strip or any other suitable means. l/Vhen the arrester is placed in position the screw .is pushed in until it hears against the Contact plate of the arrester and then rotated, causing the nut to move outward and bear against the strip which in turn bears against the Wall of the shell.

A lightning arrest-er having in combination means for :formingr a spark gap and means for damping an arc, provided with resilient contact portions, a case formed of insulating,- material and constructed to inel ose the arrester elements and provided with an. opening for the insertion oi the arrester i elements,` terminals extending through the walls of the case and having portions adapted to bear on the contact portions of the arrest-er, and constructed to hold the arrester in` position in the case and a lid or cover for the opening of the case.
2. A lightning arrester having in combination a case formed of insulating material, separable arrester elements arranged in the case, terminals one of which is adjustable extendingr through the Walls of the case and adapted to electrically contact with the arrester elements and hold the latter in operative relation with each other.
