mountings ofnovel construction and which admit of the roller being turned to any angular position, and at the same time prevent backward rotation of the roller should the draft cables or ropes break, thereby preventing the house or load becoming umnanageable, or running away on a down grade, in the event of the draft rope parting or becoming loose from any cause.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means -for eifecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.

Fig. 4L is a horizontal section on a plane corresponding with the upper side of the -flat ring, portions of the latter being broken away to show the opposite arrangement of the upper and lower ratchet teeth.

The roller 1 may be of any material and size and is preferably of wood and supplied with metal ends 2, which are flanged so as to embrace end portions of the roller, each end piece being provided with ratchet teeth 3 and an outer boss 4 through which a shaft 5 passes. The end pieces 2 are castings and '.the flanges 6 thereof embrace reduced' end portions of'- the roller 1 so as to come flush iwiththe surface thereof.. The end pieces 2 being of metal reinforce the wooden roller 1, land materially assist in prolonging the life lor period of usefulness, besides providing substantial means for the ratchet teeth 3,. which coperate with pawls 7 to prevent backward rotation of the roller. 'The shaft 5 is heavy and of steel and passes through the roller 1 and the metal end pieces 2,` and `is supported at its ends in pillow blocks or bearings 8. Anti-friction devices are interposed between the terminal portions of the lshaft 5 and the bearings to cause the roller to turn with a mini-mum amount of resistance. v
The framework for the roller consists of two parts, an upper frame and a lower frame, the latter consisting of a timber 9, and the upper frame consists of longitudinal timbers 10 and cross timbers 11, the several timbers 10 and 11 being bolted or connected in any substantial manner at their points of crossing. A flat ring 12 is secured to the underside of the upper frame, and is pro vided with upper ratchet teeth 13 and lower ratchet teeth 14. The flat ring 12 is of metal and constitutes the turn table upon which the upper frame turns when moving the same to adjust the roller 1 to the required angular position. The ratchet teeth 13 face in an opposite direction to the ratchet teeth 14C and a set of pawls 15 is provided to coperate with the ratchet teeth 13, and a second set of pawls 16 is provided for coperation with the lower ratchet teeth 14, said pawls in conjunction with the ratchet teeth Xing the position of the upper frame and the roller. When the pawls 15 and 16 are moved out of engagement with the ratchet teeth 13 and 14, the upper frame may be turned to any position to enable the load resting upon the roller to be directed in the desired course. Plates 17 are secured to the upper side of the lower frame or timber 9 andare arranged to Colne directly beneath the flat ring 12, so as to receive the wear and sustain the perpendicular pressure of the load. A circular plate 18 is secured to the top side of the'lower frame or timber 9 and is arranged midway between the plates 17 and concentric with the ring 12. A companion plate 19 is secured to the lower side of the upper frame and rests upon the plate 18the two plates 18 and 19 sustaining the wear and pressure of the load centrally of the upper and lower frames. A king bolt 20 passes through the upper and lower frames and the plates 1S and 19 and constitute the axis about which the upper frame turns. Corresponding openings 2l are provided in the upper and lower frames and are adapted to receive pins 22 when it is required to tix the position of the upper `frame so as to prevent any turning thereof, as when the load is to be moved in a direct line for a considerable distance. The lower traine is provided with spurs 23 to penetrate the sill or sleeper upon which the dolly may be placed so as to prevent slipping. It is to be understood that any means may be provided and interposed between the lower frame and the surface upon which it may be placed, so as to prevent slipping. The several pawls are spring actuated so as to automatically engage with the respective ratchet teeth.
A metal bar 2li is attached to the upper frame at each side of the roller as close to the bearings thereof as possible. These bars 24 materially strengthen the frame and secure it when the load is to one side or the other. The bars may be placed underneath or on top of the frame as desired to secure the best results.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new 1s:
l. In a device of the character speciied,
the combination of a lower traine, an upper t-ions, and pawls fitted to the other :traine and cooperating with said ratchet teeth to secure the upper traine in an adjusted position.
2. In combination, a lower traine, an upper traine mounted upon the lower traine to turn about a vertical axis and provided with a load sustaining roller, a tlat niet al ring secured to the underside of the upper iframe and provided with two sets ot ratchet teeth facing in opposite directions, pawls applied to the lower frame and cooperating with said ratchet teeth, and wear plates secured to the upper side of the lower traine and coming beneath the said tlat ring.
