. Be -.it'known that I, JoIIN A. Boron, aciti zen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Springfield -inihe countyof Sangamon and State ,of Ilhno1s, have. invented certain new Printingxan'd Folding Papers,..of which the following issuch a full, clear, and exact .description as-willenable others skilled in the art-to which it. appertains to make and use my said invention;
. This: application is division of my ap- My invention relates-to apparatuses such as' are used to print and fold papers 'inbook The purpose of my invention is to produce an, apparatus having continuously rotating and positively quick acting folder devices 'ing plate cylinders carrying plates with columns lengthwise ofsaid cylinders to always fold at'the same speed and always fold in book form irrespective of the number of decks" in use, and "without using duplicate plates. Y 'lVithfl this, general purpose-in view the more specific pur oses are to provide an apparatus in which the first folder cylinder press there-by reducing to the minimum the travel of the webs and avoiding theuse' of complicated means for changing'the direc web and conveying the web-members to' the folder devices. I
With these ends in. view my invention con-' andcombination's of parts shown in the annexed drawings to which reference 1s hereby scribed, and finally recited in the claims.

pitch circles, and other parts of the mechan ismare shown in-outline only. The gist ofthe invention consists in the relative arrangement and relation of the parts, and it is therefore unnecessary toshow and describe well known details of construction in which this apparatus does not materially differ from otner apparatuses in common use.
The main frame A, is of the usual construction and is arranged to sup ort multiple sets of rotating plate cylinders fl, carrying plates lengthwise of the cylinder. Each of the plate cylinders B is two plates in circumference and ref'erably two or more lates in width. T e f main plate cylinc ers are equipped with exclusively original plates; duplicate plates being used only on the sup+ plement lat-e cylinders. Paper rolls C, mounted 1n suitable bearings on the frame, supply web to the late cylinders. Rotating blanket cylinders of the usual well known form cooperate with the plate cylinders. The printlng apparatus may also have inking devices of any suitable form; but such inking devices form no part of my invention and therefore are not shown or described.
' The means shown in the drawings for 0 erating the. plate cylinders and'blanket cy inders of all of "the decks 'at full-speed; consist of vertical shaft D, turning in hearings on the main frame; bevel cog pinions D securedon the shaftl) ,by set screws (1; bevel pinions D secured on the shafts of the co cylinders D and meshing with and driven by the pinions D and a bevel cog ginion D, secured on the main drive shaft meshing with and driving the lower cog pinion on the shaft D Intermeshing is ur wheels B secured on the shafts of the cy inders D, and B, cause them to turn in-unison. The-means shown in the drawings for operating one set of blanket cylinders and p ate. cylinders at half. speed consists of a vertical shaft D", "turning in bearingson the main frame; a bevel cog-wheel D secured on the shaft of one of, the blanket cylinders; a bevel cog pinion Bit-secured on the shaft '1), by a set-screw d,'and meshing with the cog-wheel D; a bevel'cogpinion D secured'on the shaft D and a bevel cog-wheel'D secured on the maindrive shaft D andmeshing withanddriving the pinion D the cylinders of the lower deck at half speed and the 'cylin+ and shaft to disengage it from the pinion U, and a secured inv that position. The pinion I); will then 'be secured in mesh with the pinion D and the turnlngol thematn drtveslntt'tl),will
, cause the shaftD-f, to drive the cylinders of r' i i '1)", and engage v indcrs G I with and plate cylinders and the upper cylindcr has a .blade 9 and the lower cylinder has a corresponding cutting wood g which cot'ipcrate to cut the half web used on the cot'iperating the lower deck atv half-speed, and the shaft' ".D,-to drive the cylinders of the upper and middle decks at full speed. When it is desired to drive all of the plate cylinders at full speed it i-s only necessary to disengage the all of the pinions D .with the corresptmding pi'nions 1). any other suitable means may be employed to tmerateone deck at halt-speed and one or inore decks at full-speed, without departing frommy invention. I i p A folder cylinder 1*] turns ntsnitable bearings on the main frame parallelto the plate cy inders' and is geared to revolv at one half the speed of the plate cylinders. The folder cylinder 1), which is one half the length of .and twice the diameter. of the platecylinders B, has two internal dtamct-rlcz ll) lipostte. revolving blades wlnch alternate y I thronghshts 1n the wall of the cylinder to crease the sheets running-on the folder cyltndcr and project the creased sheets into position to beseized and operated upon by the folder rollers ll substantially as shown and described in my said "appli 'ation No. 207079.
l irst--cuttcr cylinders i whit-hare of the same diameter and one half the length ofthe plat-e cylinders, are actuated by suitable gearing to turn in unison .in bearings on the main frame'a-t the same speed asthc plate cylinders and are equipped with'a longitus dinal blade j: and a corresponding longitudinal cutting-wood f which serve to cut into sheets two-pages in length the webs deliveredby the former to 'said cutter cylindc s as lwreinat'ter described.
The plate cylinders B. and the blanket cylinders D, on one of the decks are geared so that they may be operatedathalf the speed of the like parts of the other deck n' decks; and the plate cylinders and the blanket cylinders of the other deck or decks turn in unison with the main cutter cylinders as alreadyexplained.
and lower supplement cutter cylof half the length 'and half the of the plate cylinders. are in line turn in unison with the half speed Upper diameter plate cylinders into sheets one page in length. which are delivered by suitable means. (not shown) on to the surface of t he'cyl inder IC. and are carried around on thec'ylhnleran d deliv .cylindcrs ll.
are foltlcd betwccn the two page sheets delivcred to the folder cylinder from the cutter Folder rollers ll, geared to c.ooperate with the rotating blades c in the folder cylinder i turn in suit-able bearings on the mainframeandseize and fold thesheets as delivercd to the folder rollers from the cylinder E. The foldercyhnder E. is driven by a shaft i which. turns in suitable bearings on the main frame and has a bevel cog wheel lC", which meshes with and drives a similar cog pinion E secured on the shaft of the folder cylinder I A cog wheel ll, secured on the other end of the shaft i meshes with and is driven by a cog-pinion li secured on the main-drivc shaft l). The t am of gear wheels is such that the folder cylinder rcvolvcs in the proper direction at the same speed as the plate cylinders. Any other suitable means may be employed for operativ'cly connecting the folder cylinder with the plate cylinders. without departing from my invention. A suitable train of gear wheels connects the folder cvhnder E. with cutter cylinders (l and the folder rollers ll so scribed.
series of angle bars K. corresponding in number and arrangement to the sets of plate c 'linders 13, are mounted on and extend diagonally across the .main frame above the former M. usual well known construction is mounted on the main frame. 'lhc lower edge of the former is contiguous and parallel to the main cutter cylinders and its upper edge is at right angles to its lower edge. The former is plural-platcs-widc in its large -dimension. the uppercdgeand one plate wide in its smaller dimension--the lower edgeand servesto associate the \Ytb-Jtittltlnu's in book forni in line with the supplement sheets. The part of the former in which the converging edges unite is for convenience of description hereinafter designated as the nose of the former.
The angle bars li and the former M together constitute an associating device which serves to associate all of the web-members of a single web in book form and present them to the maincnttcr cylinders. by which they are cut into sheets in length equal to the. width of two pages plus margins: and in a multiple-deck ap waratns all of the webs travel over a single former and the former in addition to associating the web-membcrs serves to bring together or consolidate the several webs with the pages in book form and Present the associatet-l and consolidated webs to the main cutter cylinders by which they are cut into sheets in length equal to the width of two pages plus margins.
series of rotatin rollers N. correspondlhc former .\l. which is of thc lift) 90 the mam cutter cylinders i the supplement y folder cylinder which is turning towards the n tam cutter cylinders; thereby avoiding: any circuitous travel oft-he supplement web on sheets and obviating the use of long 't a as to eonvey'the supplement sheets to the lolder evlinden This operation will be so timed 13 mt one )age ol' each ot the two-page sheets will over ie the supplement sheet carried on the surlacc ol' the lold'er cylinder.
' When the margin between the pages of the two-page sheets reaches ai'osition inljacent and parallel to the folder ro lers' ll, the rotating'blades within the folder cylinder will act to crease the double sheets aml project them outward into position to be. caught and folded by the [older rollers and the supplement sheet will lie'between the inside pages of the double anembers of members int sheet.
The means tor aetu'atinq the white cylinders, the pipe rollers, the s itter (e-vices, the cutter cylinders, the folder cylinders and the folder rollersm'ay be of any suitable or con- .venient. 'coi'ist-iltction and are therefore not" shown in detail nor particularly described.
