Specification of Letters Patent.
, Patented Oct. 6, 1908.
Application filed. December 19, 1907. Serial No. 407,238.
To all whom it may concern: 7 Y I Be it known that I,,OscARSM1TH, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Remer,
the county of Cass, State'ofMinnesota; have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sled-Knuckles; and I do hereby:
declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact descriptionofthe-invention; such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in logging sleds,
logging sled runner may be secured "to the beam to permit a certain amount ofrockingj movement or play of the runners in passing over uneven ground and my invention comprises certain combinations and. arrangements aswill be described more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown in Figure 1 a perspective view of 2. log
ging sled runner provided with my improved sleigh knuckle. Fig. 2 shows an enlarged sectional view disclosing the beamincross section and connected to the sleigh knee.
Fig. 3 discloses a longitudinal sectional view of the beam with connected runner. f Fig. 4 shows a top view of therunner cap as used in my invention, and Fig. 5 two runners connected to across beam. 1
My invention relates to that classof sleds known as logging sleds which are adapted'to carry very great loads and in connection with which all the parts must be sufficiently strong to withstand the great strain to which the sled is subjected.
In carrying out the object of my invention, I use a solid runner 1 as shown in Fig. 1 of any conventional form which is provided in front with an opening 2 adapted to receive the usual cross bar ofa suitable tongue. The forward end of the runner is reinforced upon each side bymeans of aface plate 3 suitably secured, while extending from the heel of the runner and ending at the forward nose of the runner is the shoe 3 preferably secured by means of the bolts 00 which pass entirely through the runner 1 asdisclosed in Fig. 1. Secured to the runner 1 is an elongated metallic cap A having the side flanges 4, 41 and the horizontally extending flanges 5, 5 as clearly" shown in Figs. 1 and 3. 7 At opposite ends this metallic cap is providedwiththe p'er-.
forated securing ears 6, 6 while centrally is provided the'upwardly extending lengthwise slotted cylindrical boss 7 the slot 8 of which is extended lengthwise of the cap as shown in Fig. 4. Near each end the cap is provided with the bolt openings 9 9 as clearly shown in Figs. 2 andft. v Secured to this metallic cap is a curvedrave B provided with the longitudinally disposed slot 10 and the securing 'ears 12, the ears being perforated and these perforations registering with the cap perforations 9 so that suitable bolts 13 may be pro- The object of my invention is to provide a" logging sled knuckle by means of which the jectedthrough the runner 1 through the cap openlngs9 and ear perforations so that one set of bolts ,13 Will fasten the shoe 3, the runner 1, cap -'A' and rave- B.
Held within the boss 7 as clearly shown in Fig. 2 is a head-provided pin 15 the head 16 ;.of which is semi-spherical and snugly rides within the boss 7 and which further has a reduced end 17 forming a shoulder 12 adapted to ride against the under surface of the rave slot as shown by Fig. 2. This pin 15 is carried by a suitablebeam 20 having a bore into which bore the pin 15 is driven as alsodisclosed in Fig. While Ihave shown and described but one sled knuckle, it is of course understood that two such beams 20 would be used inalogging sled as ordinarily constructed andthat each beam would have such a sled knuckle at each end.
' Now logging sleds are used to carry very heavy loads so that a great strain is imposed upon the carrying and running gear and it is highly desirable that the running gear be movable so that the runners may separately accommodate themselves to any irregularity of the surface over which the logging sled is dragged. 1 In my invention when the sled encounters an obstruction in front the nose is tilted upward and this movement is comgensated at the knuckle in that the spherical oss 7 will properly ride within the dished seating 22 o a rub plate 23 as shown in Fig. 2 which rub plate is properly secured to the under curved surface of the beam 20. The dished seating 22 is adapted to receive the boss 7% is'also shown in Fig. 3,- the rub plate being suitably'curved as disclosed in Flg. 2.
N ow as the pin 15 is carried by the beam 20 the u per part of the rave B would also be tilted ackward and for this reason I provide the slot 10 which permits a free backward andforward tilting of the runner. From this, it willbe seen that the boss 7 ,revolubly carries the rub plate 23, permitting afreemovement within certain limits of the sled runner.
The parts while made exceedingly strong are simple of construction and can be readily assembled and dissembled in merely removing the bolts 13.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to movably connect a sled runner to a cross beam, so I have confined my invention toa specific arrangement, embracing an upstanding boss, which revolubly carries a. curved rub plate, and means to properly secure the working elements.
And having thus described my said invention what I claim as new is.-
The combination with a sled runner, of a metallic cap having. suitable end openings, projecting side flanges and a centrally disposed lengthwise slotted upstanding boss, a curved rave having a central longitudinally projected slot and perforated ears, and se cured lengthwise to said cap, said ear perforations registering with said cap openings, a curved rub plate having a central imvardly dished perforated seat carried and rcvolubly held upon said boss, a bore provided beam carrying said curved rub plate, a pin having a head at one end and a shouldcr-forining reduced termination at the other, the under surface of said pin head being spherical and movably held within said boss, and passing through said curved plate and bore and being carried by said beam, said reduced. end being guided within said rave slot, and suitable bolts passing through said oar perforations and cap openings and extending into said runner to secure said rave and cap, in the manner set forth.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two itnesses.
OSCAR SMl'lll.
