To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that "I, CHARLES B. HALDE- MA-N, citizen ofthe United States, residingV in Center township, in the county of Cloud and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Troughs,`

This invention relates to feed troughs, and

To these ends the invention consists in certain novel and peculiarvfeatures ofl construction and organization as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be hadto the accompanying drawing, in

In constructing the feed trough, galvanized or other suitable sheet metal will preferably be employed, though of course I do not restrict myself to the useof any particular material or combinations of materials.
In the said drawings, 1 indicates the base plate and 2 longltudinal angleirons secured in any suitable manner to the base plate aty its side margins.

14 [indicates brace bars which extend up through and are secured rigidly to flanges 13, .and down through and are secured rigidly at their lower ends to angle irons 2 so as to constitute a series of inclined braces to "stiien and strengthen the structure as a whole and also form supports for a series of lids 15 which form closures for the troughs 7 each series of lids being provided with loops 16 at their upper ends engaging a hinge rod 17 supported in a series of eyebolts 18, depending from flanges 13 and secured to the latter by nuts 19, the lower ends of the lids resting upon the upper edges of angle irons 2 and curving outwardly and upwardly therefrom as at 20, in order to give a hog a convenient projection under which to root for the purpose of opening the lid j and giving access to the food in the jtroughs, it being understood that the open- `with parallel slots 22 engaging guide pins 23, projecting outward from the body portion and engaged by clamping or wing nuts 24, the latter being for the purpose of securing the slides at the vdesired point of adjustment, it being understood that certain grain will fall or feed more readily than other kinds and that vbecause of this fact the slides may be adjusted to accommodate the particular type of feed in or to be placed in the body portion.
Each end of the troughs is closed by an end wall 25 which fits against the endmost braces 14 and against the contiguous portions of angle irons l1, base l, and angle irons 2, and is provided at such points respectively with outwardly projecting flanges 26, 27 and 28, secured to angle irons 1l, base l and angle irons 2 respectively, by rivets or in any other suitable manner, the base flanges .27 being eut away at their ends so that said end walls shall fit properly over the outwardly projecting flanges at the lower ends of the body portion and base flanges of the angle irons 2. If desired each lid may be provided with a hook 29 for engagement by any one of the links of a chain 30, attached at its upper end to an eye bolt 31 secured to the body portion. This chain is employed for the purpose of holding the lid partly open so that a pig can see and smell the feed and thereby be induced to root under the lid to obtain access to the feed in the troughs. After the pigs are thus educated the use of the chains may be discontinued.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a feed trough possessing the features of advantage enumerated as desirable and I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be restricted to the exact details of construction shown and described as obvious modifications will suggest themselves to one skilled in the art.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A feed trough, comprising a base, an inverted-U-sliaped magazine secured to the base and provided in its lower edges with openings, angle irons secured to the base parallel with and outward of the sides of the magazine, angle irons secured in the opposite sides of the magazine, inclined brace bars connecting the angle irons secured to the magazine with the angle irons secured to the base at the corresponding sides of the magazine, end walls between the opposite sides of the magazine, the base and the `angle irons secured to the latter and forming in conjunction with said magazine, base and angle irons, troughs in communication with the magazine through the openings of the latter, and lids hinged at their upper ends to the angle irons secured to the magazine and resting at their lower ends upon and projecting outwardly beyond the angle irons of the base at the corresponding sides of the magazine; each lid lapping over the adjacent pair of brace bars.
2. A feed trough, comprising a base, an inverted-U-shaped magazine secured to the base and provided in its lower edges with openings, angle irons secured to the base parallel with and outward of the sides of the magazine, angle irons secured to the opposite sides of the magazine, inclined brace bars connecting the angle irons secured. to the magazine with the angle irons secured to the base at the corresponding sides of the magazine, end walls between the opposite sides of the magazine, the base and the angle irons secured to the latter and forming in conjunction with said magazine, base and angle irons, troughs in communication with the magazine through the openings of the latter, lids hinged at their upper ends to the angle irons secured to the magazine and resting at their lower ends upon and projecting outwardly beyond the angle irons of the base at the corresponding sides of the magazine; each lid lapping over the adjacent pair of brace bars` and adjustable valves for con trolling the openings connecting the niagazine and the troughs.
3. A feed trough, comprising a base, parallel angle irons secured to the same at its side margins, a substantially inverted U- shaped body portion fitting upon the base and secured thereto and provided in the lower edges of its opposite sides with openings and provided also with a door-controlled opening in its upper portion, end walls at the ends of said inverted-U-shaped body portion, angle irons securing said body portion and end walls together, a baud around the magazine constituted by such body portion and end walls, provided with outwardly projecting flanges, brace bars secured at their upper ends to such flanges and at their lower ends to the angle irons of the base, end walls for the troughs fitting against the outer edges of the endmost brace bars and secured to the base, its angle irons, and the body portion, eye-bolts depending fromi the flanges of said band, rods extending through said eye-bolts and lids pivoted on said rods and resting upon and projecting outward of the angle irons of the base and overlapping adjacent brace bars.
