IMPROVEMENT IN CORN -PLANETERS- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making parl: of the same.
To ally whom it may concern:

To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.`

Figure 3 represents a section of the hbpper and conveying-tube.
The nature of my invention consists in a device to operate the dropper and the, marker, and so arranged that the, grain is' dropped with every revolution ofthe covering-wheels, the marker stirring the earth every time the corn drops, and thus showing to the drivel' the regularity or irregularity of the cross-lines of the hills.
It consists, also, in stationary brushes, placed inside of the hoppers, and above the cells,.i`or the purpose of brushing oli` the surplus oi' graiu, and leaving in the cells" only the lnecessary number of kernels required.
A A is the frame.
B is the axle, to which covering-wheels O O, and cog-wheel D are secured.
E is a pinion, to the shaft of whichcl, journalled to the frame, cam F is secured.
The cam is provided with roller f, at the end, for the purpose ofdiminishiug the friction produced by the operation of the cam on the end of lever Nf.
The machine is .put in or outoi' gear by the cogwheel K, set on shaft G, working on a pivot at one end, and having a side motion at the other end, which end is operated by the hand-lever I, connected with it by means of rods i i, and plate H, pivoted to the frame at h.
By this contrivance, cog-wheel K can be brought in contact both with cog-wheel l) and pinion'E.
Beam M i-s joui-nailed to the frame A, and is iirmly connected with arms m m, jointed to the valves, or slides n fn, containing the cells, and working in the conveying-tubes ofthe hoppers S S.
The beam is also rmlyconneeted with a long and slightly-curved lever, or arm, N, the end of which is shaped into an inclined plane, of suiicient surface to permit the roller d of cam F to operate upon and to depress this end suificiently.
By the operation oieam F on lever N, beam M operates the slides n n, and drops the corn.
The beam M is also provided with two short horizontal arms ,O 0', one of which, O, is pressing against spring P, as the beam partially revolves, which spring brings the beam `and the slides rn. n back into their former position.
Ihe other arm O is jointed to a marker, Q, which, being pressed against the ground, makes a mark every whether the hills are planted regularly, and form perfeet rows crossways.
vThe marker is provided with a loop on its front side, through which passes the loose end of the spring q, secured to the frame, which spring brings the marker into its vertical position every time when it is raised from the ground.
A stationary brush, It, is placed in the hopper S above the slide, and is secured to the front side of the hopper, and has a purpose of brushing oi the surplus kernels filling the cell r, made to contain only a certain number of kernels, when the slide n is being operated by the beam M.
Draught-'pole T, pro ided with pulley t, is secured iirml y to the beam U, hinged to the frame A, andl passes between standards V, provided with holes c c', through which a pin is passed above the tongue, at any desirable height, so as to force the runners W W deeper or shallower into the ground.
lreadle X, at its front end, is hinged to the front end 'of the frame A, and a rope, Y, secured to itat 11 passes -over pulley t, and has its other end securedto the frame A, at Z.
By this arrangement the driver can lift `up the front part of the machine above the ground, when turning the machine around, or taking it to the place of work.
Having thus fully described my machine- -What' I claim as new, and my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isll. rlhe combined arrangement of the beam M, lever N, arms m m and O O, and marker Q, all arranged and operating substantially as herein described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The arrangement of the tongue T, pivoted to the upper side of the frame A, passing between the uprights V and the foot-lever X and cord Y, all as herein shown and described.
