To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, Louis FRANKLIN HAM- MER,'a .citizen of the United States,`and a resident of Omaha, in the county of Douglas 4 5 and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Fastener, of which the followingris a full, clear, and exact description.
his invention relates to fasteners; and
llke 1n osition.
An o ject of this invention is to provide a simple, inexpensivey and serviceable fastener, 15 whlch permits of the removal of the cross boards without damageI to the'latter, thus obviating the waste c the use of nails or the like.
A further object of the invention is to promaterial incident to l* vide fasteners adapted to be rotatably mounted upon the supports offences, cribs or. the like, which not only hold the cross boards in rigid position but at the same time space them vany desired distance apart and 5 a so `permit the removal of any of the .cross boar s without deranging those remaining in place.
The inventionlconsists in the construction.
and combination of parts, to be more fully 0 described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.' a
Reference is tbe-had, to the accompany-- ing drawings forming a part of: this specification, in which similar characters of refer- 5 ence indicate corresponding parts in all the views;
Figuregl is a perspective view showing the fasteners supporting cross boards in position; Fig. 2 is an enlarged crosssection showing 0 the pivotal means for mounting the fastener on a support; Fig. '3 is an"enlar,cfed perspective .view o f the fastener, and ig.'4 is an ...enlarged pers ective view showing a modification of the crm illustrated in Fig. 3. 5 Before proceeding to a more detailedl description'of my inventiomit should -be understood that although my device is appli- ...able to manyforms of structures in w ich l,*`I" ossbars, cross-boards, rods, panels or the ll, areusedit is especiallyadapted for use with fences, cribs, st'es and the like, where itis ari advantage to inount the cross memlbers removably and adjustably in place. In
cribs n iy device is especially useful, as it per- 5 mits a; ready access yto the contents of.. the
. l l i i yfasteners .to dis lace the will engage both and secure 4su ort.
aving lthus described my invention, IA claim as new and desire to secure by Letters use of nails, screws and the ylike -is entirely obviated in the cross-boards, a great e`c01`1- same at anyplace desired. Further, as the only in materialresults and the life of the 'cross-boards is lengthened. Referring more particularly to the drawlngs, 1 represents a fastener, preferably hollow, constructed of' any suitable material,
such as cast metal, wood or the like and conslstmg of an annular flange 2, a shank, a
keeper 4 and an integral head 5, vadapted for enga ement by ,a wrench or the like, to per' mit t e rotation of the fastener. The keeper 4 may be either semi-circular in form, as
shown in Fig. 4, or may have a (plurality of.
points or fingers 8,A as illustrate in Fig. 3.
l.Registering o enings 6 are 'formed in the fastener, in w ch is arranged an elongated member 7, such as a nail, screw or the like, the member serving movably to mount the fastener upon the support '9.
The cross-boards, when in position, rest upon' the shanks of the fasteners, being held out of engagement with the supports by the flanges 2. The keepers, when rotated., so
`that they are in contactwith the boards,
' serve to 'secure the latter upon the supports.
When it is 4desired to remove any 9i the boards, it is necessary simlp yto rotate the gagement with t e boards. T e keepers are cut away at one side and are Hush at the cutaway part with the shanks for this purpose. Further, the kee ers, lon account of their projection beyon the shanks on three sides thereof, may be arran ed to engage two boards, one above the s ank and the other below, at the same'time, or to engage only' one. ln the case of two boards joinin at a keeper, the latter is so constructed t at it -tegral with said shank, and a head inte al l ee lers from env them on the withsaid keeper, said head being adapte to be grasped by a wrench, said keepef being cut awayat one side of said shank;l
2. A fastener comprising a shank, 'a flange integral with the shank, a keeper integral with the shank and spaced apart from the 11eme to this specification in the presence o flange, said keeper being cut/ away at one t'wo subscribing witnesses. side of the shank, and being provided with rw Y -v (Y Y y n k,
an integral head whereby to turn the keeper, LOU lb l( lun KLIK 'HAB und" said fastener being provided with means l VVituesses:
whereby it may be secured to a support. O. WILLIAMS,
lr testimony whereovr1 I have signed my H. Z. JAoKsoN.
