It is 'further to be observed that the-retaining pin is so secured to the rear tace of the body 1 as to cause'said'pin to lie closely thereto, so that the engaging portion of the pin may be moved in a plane approximately parallel with the plane of the body, In Iorder to cause the head of the match to .ignite when .drawn across the body l, I provide a plurality of serrations 4 on the outer surface of the body l by striking up portions of the surface of the body so that said surface will be roughened which will result in positively igniting the match when the head thereof is drawn across the serrations.

Immediately surrounding the serrated portion of the body surface is a bead 4a which is formed by curving outwardly the periphery of the body and it will be seen 'that the garments will be engaged by the bead and held out of contact with the serrations on the body. It will {nrt-her be seen that by directing the free edge of the bead a sufficient distance beyond the rear-face of the body that a slight cavity will be formed thereby fully protecting the retaining pin when the igniter is not in use. The projecting edge ofthe bead will also bind aga-inst the garment and when the pin is secured therethrough thus forming a rigid bearing -tor the igniter.

In Figi. 3 and 5, I have dispensed with the. retaining pin 2 and in place thereof I have provided-the periphery of the bead 4a with a plurality of pointed tongues 5 which are directed through the inner lining of the garment and bent upon themselves to secure the body to the garment, the manner of applying the same heilig clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing.

In Fig. 1 of the drawing, I have shown the device as applied to use and in this instance I have secured the body to the inner :tace of the vest and when it is desiredto strike a match, the lower edge of the vest is lifted which will result in exposing the serrated. portions of the body and by drawing the head of the match there across, said head will beignited and when this result is accomplished, by returning the upturncd portion of the -vestto its normal position, the igniter will'be entirely removed from view.

mln Fig. G of the drawing I have shown a slightly diii'crcnt form of'device in that the serrations in the surface of the body are dispensed with and the outer edges thereof provided with retaining strips 6 which are adapted to extend over the edges of and secure to the body a section of sand paper or the like 7, the roughened surface o the section of paper serving the same purpose as the serrations7 and the strips 6 serving the same purpose as the bead 4a.

It will. nonl be seen that I have provided a very cheap 'and economical device for igniting a match head and one that can be attached -to the garment and disposed out of View when not in use.

What claim is:

An igniter of the class described comprising a bodyv having a roughened surface and l ya bow pin secured to said body, one of thev name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
