GILBERT LQ BAILEY; or PoR'rLA ND, MA-NF.. `Laim Patent No. 89,966, zum May- 11, 1869.
IMPROVE!) SAMPLE-HOLDER The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makngpart; of the same.
To all whom t'tma/y concern." I' i Be it known that I, GILBERT L. BAILEY, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland, and State of Maine,
' `have invented a new and improved Mode of Holding Samples on the outside of paperboxesor sample-cards; and I do hereby declare that the following'is a full and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. l l
The natpre of my invention consists in providing a metallic-spring samplefholden--so constructed that it may be readily attached to and detached from a paper box, or sample-card, or any similar substance upon which it may be desirable to hold samples temporarily.
.lhe'following` description of the construction and operation of my invention, will-enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.
.I construct'my spring of hard-drawn wire, of a size according to the amount of pressure .desired `For one of the size represented in the accompanying drawing, a piece of wire about seven inches in lengthis required. Y Ata point, say, two-eighths ofan `*inch from the rmiddle, each way, it is bent to obtuse angles.
V'A bend is then made about one and a quarter inch from each end, outwardly, 'and back in an opposite direction from the first bend, so that, when nished, the spring, in form, somewhat resembles 4the capital letter VM. p
One-quarter of an inch from each end, a slight oli'` set, A, is made downwards, the object of which is to prevent the ends of the.. spring from entering too far` through thev material upon which. it is placed, and from slipping back.
Its operation is as follows:
Two small holes are made through the top of a paper-box cover, F, at such distance apart, that, by pressing the two ends ot' the spring towards each other, they can be passed through or into the holes until the offset stops them, and in this way the spring can be adjusted to boxes of different widths.
' The lateral tension ofthe spring, in conjunction withthe offsets, serves to hold it in place, and the ends projecting under-'the cover, as shown'by the dotted lines, prevent their being lifted out when in opi sion o f the wire will'hold it securely upon the box or By raising the spring at the second bend E, it can be readily removed from its position, and attached to another box,'if. desired; and in this respect it is sui perior to and vdifferent from' any metallic spring used for a like purpose, with which I am acquainted. It also holds the articles more firmly, and is more convenient in use than any other temporary fastening nowemployedfor the same purpose.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A metallicrspriug sample-holder, made and operating' substantially as, and for thepurpose herein set forth and described.
