DAGFINN LOSSIUS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TOBACCO-PIPE CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Sept. 22, 1908.
Application filed July 6,1908. Serial No. 442,118.
Be it known that I, DAGFINN Lossrus, a subject of the King of Norway, and residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented 'a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Pipe Cleaners, of which the following is a speclfication;
The object of my invention is to provide a sim 1e and cheap device adapted to be carrie on the person, which can be inserted in the bowl of a ipe and by rotating it therein will cut out all matter incrusted therein.
The manner in which I accomplish my object is described in the following specifications and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a ipe, the bowl being in section showing my evice inserted therein. Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1., Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section on theline 33 Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 are vertical elevations showing the edge of the device.
In the drawings A represents an ordinary pipe and B the interior of the bowl thereof. C indicates the pipe cleaner as a whole. This cleaner consists of a metallic spring loop D, constructed with arallel extensions or legs E; these legs are at and comparatively thin as compared with the round part F of the loop and are pierced at the ends G-for ivot insH. Pivotally secured to each 0 the egs E by the ivot pins H are avpair of scrapers I and Each of these members have a pair of fixed jaws K between which the legs E of the loo D are pivotally held by the pivot ins H. heface of each of the members to form parallel V shaped edges L. On one of these members I the grooved face is straight and the face of the other member J is curved as shown in Fig. 1. tion the grooved face of each of said members is rounded to fit the curve of the interior of the bowl.
When my device is constructed as described and illustrated, its use and operation is as follows: The s ring tension of the loop is set with the legs 15 spaced from each other so as to reguire'pressure to bring the members I and J c ose enough together for insertion into the bowl of a pipe, and when'inserted and J are grooved longitudinally.
In cross sec therein to press the grooved face of each member against the walls of the interior. This spring pressure also forces the said members to fit any vertical inclination there may be in the said interior as each of said members is pivotally free for such adjustment by the springpressure. The vertical curved face of the member J is ada ted to clean such parts as cannot be reache by the straight face of the member I and to clean out the bottom part of the bowl, and the whole interior being thus scraped clean'by the rotation of the cleaner therein.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. A device of the kind described consisting of a looped spring member havin a pair of egs; an a air of members pivota ly suported on sai legs, each of said members vaving vertically grooved faces, said mem bers being adapted to be inserted in the bowl of a tobacco pipe and by rotation therein to scrape and thereby clean the interior thereof. 2. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a spring member having a loop and a pair of legs; of-a pair of longitudinally grooved members pivotally secured to the end of said legs, said members when pivotally attached to said spring member, eing insertible in the bowlof a tobacco ipe and by rotation therein are adapted to c'lban the interior thereof.
3. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a spring member; of a pair of longitudinally grooved members, said members being pivotally secured to op osite parts of said sprmg member and inserti 1e in the bowl of a tobacco pipe, the grooved parts of said members bein in contactwith and adapted when said devlce is rotated, to scrape and thereby clean said bowl.
4. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a spring member, of a pair of members pivotally secured to said spring member, eac of said pair of members having a grooved face adapted when inserted in the bowl of a tobacco pipe and rotated to scrape and clean the interior thereof.
DAGFINN LOSSIUS.
