Description

N.V E. GAGNQN.
' UAR STAKB. APPLICATION FILED APB. 14,1908.

` Arm/fm/EysI um, was PATENT oEEroE.
CAR-STAKE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 22, 1908.
Application filed April 14, 1908. Serial No. 426,997.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON E. GAG- NON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Woodland, in the county of Clarke and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Car-Stakes, of which the fol owing is a specification.
This invention is an im rovement in car stakes, especially in that c ass of stakes for application at each side of fiat cars designed to be loaded with logs, and the improved stake can be applied to the sockets generally found at the side of such cars, or can be fastened thereto in various ways as will be more fully described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the stake embodying my invention applied for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the stake applied for use, a portion of the car being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the im rovement as in use, dotted lines being emp oyed to indicate the released position of the stake; and Fig. 4 is a face view from the outer side of the stake.
In carrying out the invention the stake comprises an upright A, and a base B, which latter may be secured to the car in any suitable way and is shown as grooved in its outer face and side edges for the reception of cross bars C', and side bars C2 of clips C.
The base B is provided at its, up er end with the knuckles B which receive etween them the knuckle A rojecting outwardly from the lower end o the upright A, and these knuckles A and B are connected by the pintle D on which the upright A hinges.
At the point between the pintle D and its inner edge the base B is provided with transverse openings B2 in its side wings B3, and these openings B2 aline with an opening A2 through the upright when the latter is in position for use as shown in Figs. 1 to 4 and a key E is driven through the openings tapering toward its end E', which is perforated to receive the hook F which o erates as a keeper to revent the aocidenta displacement of the ey E when the latter has been driven home. A chain E2 may be connected with the key E, and a chain F2 connected with the keeper F in order to prevent said parts from being lost.
The constructlon is simple, ermits the upright of the stake to be turne to the position for use and can be maintained in such position with a minimum strain upon its pivot or hinge, so the key C locking the upright in osition for use is located out of the way and between the hinge or pivot of the upright and the point of application of the strain to the stake.
It will be understood in o eration the uprights project above the be of the car, and when it is desired to unload the car the pin or key E can be knocked out with a hammer or mallet and the stake will then bend over the hinge so that the logs can roll off the side of the car.
I claim- 1. The improvement in stakes herein described, comprising a base provided at its u per end with outwardly projecting knuces having an opening for the pintle and having side wings provided between said pintle opening and their inner edges with openings for the key, an upright fitting at its lower end between the said wings and the base, and havin at such end an outwardly rojecting knuck e having an opening alined) with the pintle openings in the knuckle of the base, the said upright being also provided between its pintle and its inner edge with a key opening alined with those in the side wings of the base, the pintle and the key passedthrough their respective openings, and a retaining means for the key, substantially as set forth.
2. A car stake comprising a base having a knuckle provided with a pintle opening, and also having between said pintle opening and the inner edge of the base a key opening, an upright pivoted to the base and provided between its said pivot and its inner edge with an opening alined with the key opening in the base, and a key passed through the opening in the base and upright, substantially as set forth,
3. The combination in a car stake of a base having its outer face and sides grooved for reception of a clip fitting in the grooves of the base, an u right pivoted adjacent to the outer edges o its lower end to the base, the said base and the upright being provided between the said pivot and their inner edges with alined openings, and a key passed through said openings for securing the upright stake in position for use, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
