Description

GEORGE A. Lora-or PLLNFIELD, Naw JERSEY, AssIGNOR 'ro AMERICANciii'cufnign'tooil'l` i COMPANY, or PORTLAND, MAI-NaA CORPORATION OF MAINE.
ELcrnorLaTmG y Arranam I No. lematico.
upon or over the tank.
' Be; it known that I, GEORGE A. Lu'rz, a. citizen of' the Unitedl States, and resident of Plainfield, in the county .of Union and State of New Jersev, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elcctrophiting Apparatus, of 'which the following is a speci-v fication.,
The object of my invention toetl'cctivelj,-
velectroplate the interior as woll :is thc'cxterior of metal pipes, tubes, nud hollow articles.
In carrying out my invention l provide :in anode to enter the pipe or tube, with insulaition in connection with such nuod(` to iiss'urc that the latter will not contact with tlul pipe ior tube, and such pipe or tube, with its contained anodeis immersed in an electrolytic' bath with one or more anodcs in the hath exterior of the iic and such inner :uid outer l anodes are connected witii ono side of the 'electric circuit while thc pipe or tube is connected tothe other sido ol' the circuit, as by being hung from a cathode plate supl'iorted In one embodiment of in v invention I pro vide a perforated insulating tube nda-pled to freely enter the pipe or tube to he plat-cd, and
, within such insulating tube l provide. :inode metal particles.
material such as particles of plating n'ietnl, as zinc, silver or the like, and the terminal of the circuit is in contact with For this purpose in the drawings I have showna rod passing through the insulating vtube, and supporting the same at the-lower end, as by a disk, which also supports the metal plating particles and retains the same within the insulating tube, which rod is connected with the anode side Of the circuit.
My invention also comprises the novel details of improvement and combinations of y parts that will be more fully hereinafter set Orth and then pointed out in the'clainis. Reference is to be had to the accompanyin` drawings forming part hereof, wherein, igure V1 is a vertical section of an electro'- platiiig apparatus embodying my invention, ig. 2 'is n top view thereofz the cathode plate being removed. Fig. 3 1s a detail section, and Fig. lais a partly sectional' view illustrating a modification.
, Similar numerals of reference indicate core res Onding parts in the several views.
, he numeral 1 indicates a suitable tank which supports a conductorvor ring 2 which 'the plating or in any other suitable manner, and at 4 I 2, u on which hooksk suitable anodes 5 de pent into the. tank. Within the outer'anodes 5 is located the pipe, tube o1"r the like 6 to be plated. In the drawings I have, shown pi I 4or tube 6 detachably connected with a cath* ode plate 7 shownv resting upon tank 1, which plate is shown provided with threads 7 to receive the threaded end of the pi Vi'ithin pipe 6 is a tube 8, of rubber or otgr suitable insulating material, and provided -with any suit-able number of perforations 8, which insulating tube is of less diameter tnan pipe or tube 6 so as not to contact with the same.
At Q is a supporting rod shown passing through insulating tube 8 and provided at its lower end with a disk or closure 10, shown held in place by nut ..11, whereby the insulatlower end of suoli tubis closed. Said rod `is insulated therefrom by suitable insulation 12. Within insulating tube 8 is placed the plating metal 13 in the forni of particles,
granules or the like,
rod 9 Anodes 5 and anode rod 9 are shown connected by wires 14B, 14b with one side of the line 14 and cathode plate 7 is shown 'prothe other side of the line 14.
Instead of utilizin loose particles or granules of lating nietalgwithin the pipe or tube to be lated, and insulated therefrom as deof suitable plating metal having insulating material 8b. such as one or more rubber or porcelain sleeves, mounted upon or attached 8*?serving to keep the p ating 'metal from contact with the pipe or tube 6.
In accordance with my improvements the anode withinl the pipe, tube or the like to be plated issuitably supported therein and out of contact therewith all whereby the plating may simultaneously take lace'on the interior as well as the exterior of t e ipe, tube or the like. In the construction s Own in Fi 1, the inner anode may remain sus nded om Aits support, such as the catho e plate, for I continuous use whilethe pipes to the rod, all adapted to be fitted within pipe or tube 6, as shown in F' 4, the insulation Patented sept. s2, roca may be attached within the tank by 3 l have -shown hooks hanging from conductor ing tube is supported upon the rod and the is shown supported'froincathode plate 7 and i as indicated in Fig. 1, which plating particles are in circuit with vided with a binding post 15 connected with scribe I may provide the rod or the like 13, i
or tubes 6 1 10 te readily detached from su'ch pim and IGP 8 'ced as required, and the inner anode 'with the pipe or tube to be lated ma. 1thus be inserted in and removed rom the e ectrof lA4 ticbatli simultaneously. Furthermore, by tie arrangement shown theinner anode particles or granules may be readily removed and ifeplzwed `vtithin insulating 'perforateil tub'e 8 by removing the closure Illas required;
Thepeifoi'ations ofthe insulating tube 8 per'- mit the electro platin actionV on the interior oi' pipe or (ubc. wiile at the same time retaiiiiiir the plating particles or granules within tie tube. e
Having now described my invention what I claim is:
