P. J. DOYLE.
V PUMP VALVE.

PATRICK J. DOYLE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PUMP-VALVE T '0 all whom it may conc rn:
Be it known that l, PATRICK J. Dovnn. a citizen of the United States of America. and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump- Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that type of pump valves employed in steam pumps for ifting water to high elevation. with an existing high back pressure and a forcible closing of the outlet valves of the pump cylinder. And the present improvement has for its object to provide a simple and efiicientstructural arrangement and combination of parts in a movable valve head of the type mentioned, whereby the same is adapted to withstand the forcible impact aforesaid and maintain its seating surface in perfect condition during long continued use, all as wiil hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1, is a vertical sectional elevation of an outlet valve for a pump, to which the present improvement is applied. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of a portion of the backing shell of the present valve head. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of the ordinary valve seat or bushine.
Simi ar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the different views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a portion of the partition or diaphragm of a pump cylinder 111 which the series of outlet valves are mounted as usual in steam pumps; and each of which mountings comprises a spider bushing or valve seat 2, screwing into an orifice in the partition 1, a guide stem 3 screwing centrally into said valve seat, a cap nut 4 at the upper end of said guide stem, and an intermediate spring, 5 tending to hold the movable valve member 6 down upon the seat or bushing 2.
The material part of the present invention relates to the special construction of the movable valve member 6, and com rises a body 7 of tough metal, such as abbitt metal, arranged to form the face of the valve; such body being of a thickness approximating that of the valve heads now in general use. It! the present construction such body portion 7 is reinforced by a backing S of cast iron, brass, or the like, and with a view to Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 11, 1907.
Patented Sept. 22, 1908.
Serial No. 396,872.
attain a strong and effective connection such backing is provided with a shallow peripheral flange 9, and with an inner annular flange 10, the two flanges forming an annular chamber into which the mass or body 7 of Babbitt metal or the like is east, after the surfaces of such annular chamber have been tinned or otherwise pre iared to insure a perfeet union between the body 7 and backing 8 during the operation of casting said body in place. 4
The inner annular flange 10 ot' the backing has a depth approximating the thickness of the valve. head and is intended to form the bearing for such movable valve head as the same moves up and down upon the guide stem 3, and as so constructed is adapted to prevent irregular wear of parts and in consequence insure a proper scaling movement of the valve head during continued actual use.
1 l is an annular flange on the upper fa e of the backing S to form a socket recess for the lower end of the valve closing spring 5, as shown.
Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An outletvalve head [or steam pumps, comprising a body of Babbitt or like metal forming the entire seating face of the valve head, and a metal backing therefor formed with a peripheral flange and an inner annular flange forming the bearing for the valve head in its movement, said flanges havin a less depth than the valve head, substantially as set forth.
2. An outlet valve head for steam pumps,
comprising a body of Babbittor like metal forming the entire seating, face of the valve head, and a metal backing therefor formed with a peripheral flange, an inner annular flange forming the bearing for the valve head in its movements and an annular flange forming a socket recess for a closing spring, said peripheral and inner annular flanges having a less depth than the, valve head, substantially as setforth.
Signed at Chicago Illinois this 9th day of October 1907.
