To all burg; umm- 1 Be it known that I, Josnrn WALKER, a
andria, in "thecounty: of Alexandria. and State otvrrgima, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Brick- Machines, of which the following is "a spe'ci fication, i
My; invention relates to improvements in brick machines and pertains more particu larlyto rotary maclriines. f The object of my invention is to provide a liraehineoftbis char-review in which the brick can be-read'ilytrimmed or cut on their outer facesaft-er having been pressed andwhich will absolutely prevent the-brick from crack ing orotherwis'e enusirrg a rough surface.
' the bric s 4 therefrom The compressor roller or 'wheel '5 corn st esses the brick within the mold, all of whic-- is well understood by thoseskilled in the art, and needs 110 further description. Aftertlie: bricks are formed it is necessary to trim the outer face of the brick so as to have a. smooth fiat brick, and, inorder to do this at the same moldingo nation, I provide a knife 5 which may be 0 any dejsired structure or character.
In machines of this character it has been foundvery ditlicult to cut the bricks perfectl smooth as the knife breaks the clay and eaves the outer face of the brick uneven. It has also been found difficult to s) arrange the knife that it can be operated upon the .brick while under pressure, as the arrange ment of'the molding and pressure wheels is "such that a knife not be arranged to operate upon the brick while under pressure.
M invention is to provide means whereby the nife oszroperste upon the brick while under pressure, In order to accomplish this resultt i provide a roller? which is rot-stably frame 11 ot the brick molding machine, with the'roller7 bearing against the outer eriph'' eryof the brick molding wheel 1. T e saidtion 12,is of a tubular form. Pivotslly oarried by the frame 11 are blocks 13 and 14 into-the tubular portion 12 and me independently movable therein. The said rods carry stops ;1S and surrounding the rods between the stop and the arms are coil-springs against the brick. The knife, as shown, bein; in contact with the brick just below the fore the knife will nottear or break the brick, but will make a. clean and even cut. 4
In order to slightly soften the brick at the point of contact with the knife, I ruvide i1 horizontal pipe 2O which is supplied with stczun and is provided with a. series of opennnd thus cause the knife to make acican cut.
In order to vary the tension of the roller the rods 15 and 16 are screwed in or out; of the blocks 13 and 14. The roller 7 is made with openings. .The opening in one journal serves as a steam lnlet and the opening in the thesteani is passed through the roller and the ders tood by those skilled in the' art- Havin thus fully described my invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
machine, of a pressure roller bearing against the outer periphery of the brick melding of the brick while under pressure of the roller, and means for supplying steam between the knife and the brick.
2. The combination with. a rotary brick machine, of a pressure roller bearing slqninst the outer periphery of the brick moldin wheel, a spring holding the roller under tensprmg, a knife operating upon the outer penphery of the brick just below-the point of roller, the brick is under pressure and therehollow and the journals thereof are provided same kept very hot for the, purpose fuily uu- *1 1. The combination with a rotary brick.
I mount-ed'bctweenthe L sh aped' arms 8 and 9:1
The said arms 8 and!) are wot-ally mounted at their up or ends, as indicated-at- 10, to the arms, as shown, are L-shnped and the por-';
which have screwed therem the rods 15 and 1 6 and the said rods are locked by the lock-:- nuts 17. The opposite ends of the rods pass I 19 which normally force the arms inwardly and hold the roller at the proper tension ings 21 which throw the. steam upon the brick other journal serves as an exhaust, whereby Wheel, a knife operating upon the outer face s'ion, .means'for varying the tension of the periphery of the brick molding wheel, said arms carm'mg horizontal sleeves, hori'l mtal contact of the roller with the brick, and a pipe between the knife and wheel to supply -steam to the brick at the point of contact of A rods enterhng said sleeves and having'thcn- 40 roller rotata the knife with the brick.
3. The combination .with a rotary brick machine, of pivoted arms carried by the machine, a roller mounted between the lower end of said arms and bearing upon the outer ieriphery. of the brick molding wheel, springs bearing against said arms, and a knife erating u on the outer face of the brick ust below t 1e point of contact of the roller with the brick.
4. The combination with a rotary brick machine, of L-shaped arms pivotally mounts edat their up or ends within the machine, a
l y mounted between said arms,
outer ends =pivotally connected to the machine, means for longitudinally adjusting f I 1 v said rods, :3. col ill carried by each of said rods, coil sprmgsbctween the sleeves and collars and normally holding the roller against the 5 molding wheel, and a knife operating'upon the outer face of the brick just below the I point of'contact of the pressure roller with the brick.
7. The combinat on with arotary brick mach ne, of pivoted I0(l8. (35-.II1B(l by the machine, sleeves slidably mounted upon said rods and having upwardly extending -1nem-.
bers pivoted to the frame, a roller mounted A rods pivotally and adjustably mount d upon the frame of the machine and telescopin' 20 within said arms, and Cprings surrounding the rods and bearing against said armsand between said sleeves and bearing upon the outer periphery of the brick molding wheel, springs surrounding saidrods and normally. holding the sleeves 1n theiroutward position,
normally holding the roller against the wheel under tension.
The combination with a rotary brick mamine of an auxiliary pressure roller bearing against the outer periphery of the brick ends of said arms and bearing upon the outer means for longitudinally adjusting said rods,
a knife operating upon the outer face of'the 6o brick just below the point of contact of the pres ure roller with the brick, and a steam" inc behreen the'knife and extending paralci with the periphery of the molding wheel,
and the said pipe having openings for spraying steam on the brick at the point of contact of the knife. 7
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
