Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN STIEFENHOFER, CITY ISLAND, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED RocKlNG-CHAIR AND ROTARYv FAN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 89,897, dated May 11, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN STIEFENHOFER, of City Island, in the county 0f Westchester and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a new and useful Combined Rocking-Chair and Rotary Fan; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the said combined rocking-chair and rotary fan, andFig.
2 is a front elevation of -the same.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
In many places the flies and insects in the l air are an annoyance to a person while sitting as the fulcra of said levers upon the rocker are moved up or down as the chair is rocked.
In the drawing, a a are vthe legs, b the seat, c c the arms, d theback, and e the rockers, of an ordinary rocking-chair.
Upon the arm at the side of the rockingchair I attach a joint-piece, f, uniting the same with the standard g; and h is a set-screw by which the standard g can be set at any desired inclination, so that its end can be retained nearer to or farther from the back of the chair. At the upper end of this standard g, I make a tubular socket, into Which the stock l of the fan 7c is introduced; and this fan is fitted with a pulley, t', and around this pulley i the cord m passes, and its ends connect to the levers o and p,- and said levers are mounted on the fulcra 2 and 3, and provided with the shoe portions 4,4, that rest upon the surface of the lioor, so that the levers vibrate as the chair is rocked backward and forward, and in so doing the fan is revolved first one way and then the other, thus, by the fan, giving a pleasant current of air upon the person sitting in the chair. By the joint at 6 the standard g may be moved backward or forward, so as to bring the fan nearer to or farther from the person.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The levers o and p, set upon the rockers of the chair, in combination with the standard g, hinged to the chair, so as to be adjusted, and the fan k, which is revolved by the cord, as
and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 3d day of April, A. D. 1869.
MARTIN STIEFENHOFER. Witnesses:
