NUT-LOCK.
7 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 8, 1908.
Application filed September 16, 1907. Serial No. 393,080.
T 0 all whom it may concern: 7
- Be it known that I, ALBERT W. Dawns, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Hope, in the county of San Joa uin and State of California, have invente certain new and useful Improvements in N ut-Locks and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art, to which it appcrtains to make and use the same. r
This invention relatesto improvements in nut locks.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient nut lock which may be readily applied to a bolt and nut to securely prevent the latter fror'n becoming loose.
Afurther object is to provide a nut lock which may nut when desired, to permit the same to be With these objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construcand arrangement of parts described hereinafter claims. I
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lock, showing the application of the same; Fig. 2' is a vertical sectional view of the lock as shown in Fig. 1 Fig. 3 a perspective view of the lock before being apphed to a bolt and nut; and Fi 4 is a plan view of the reverse side of the lock.
As shown in the accompanying drawing, the lock, 1, is formed from a single oblong piece of malleable metal, on one. end of which is formed a bolt-engaging )ortion, 2, having formed therein a centrally disposed bolthole, 3. On the reverse side of the bolt-engaging portion, 2 which is thickened to provide additional strength, is formed a checkered or serrated surface, 4, which projects a slight distance beyond the maln portion of the lock, said checkered or serrated surface being adaptedto form a firm engagement with the articleto which the bolt is applied, thus preyenting the turning of the lock when the nut s being screwed up on the bolt.
()n the opposite end of the lock is formed a nut-en aging portion, 5, in which is formed an angu ar opening, 6, ada ted to be engaged'with the nut when t e litter is screwed up to proper position on t e bolt. The boltbe readily disengaged from the engaging portion, 2, and the nut-engaging portion, 5, are connected by an integrally formed slightly attenuated neck, 7, which is adapted to be bent or folded over upon itself when the portion, 5, is engaged with the nut. This neck is of approximately the same Width as the end portions to prevent twisting or breaking thereof when turning pressure is applied to thenut.
In app ying the lock the portion, 2, is engaged with the projecting end of the bolt, after which the nut is applied theretoand screwed up on said end into firm engagement with the serrated portion, 4,.against the side o the object to which the bolt is applied. After the nut has thus been screwed up in place, the neck, 7, isbent over in position to engage the apertured .portion, 6, with the nut, thus securely holding the same against movement'lin any direction. Should it be desired at any time to remove the nut from the bolt, the portion 5 is simply bent back out of engagement with the nut, when the same may be readily unscrewed in the usual manner.
A nut lock constructed as herein shown and described will besimple and inexpensive in construction, reliable in use and may be quickly applied to a bolt and nut without the use of a specially constructed tool.
Havin thus fully described my invention, what I cFaim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
A nut lock comprising an oblong body of pliable but non-resilient material whose ends are substantially round and are'connected by a slightly attenuated neck, both of said ends being of the same area and adapted to mate when folded, one of said ends being thickened and roughened on its under surface and provided with a central hole to receive a bolt, the opposite end being of equal thickness with the neck and being provided with a centrally disposed squared openin said last named end being folded over para portion, 2, thus tightly bindin the" lel with the first named end to engage the;
nut.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witncsses.
ALBERT W. DAWES.
