Description

No. 898,142. PATENTED SEPT. 8, 1908. A. SG'HIGKERLING.
LOVING CUP. I
APPLICATION FILED APR. 4, 1968.
' l/Vl/ENTUR ATTORNEY ALFRED SOHIGKERLING, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LOVING-CUP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 8, 1908.
Application filed April 4, 1908. Serial No. 425,136.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED SoHIoKER- LING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loving-Cups, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in drinking cups or glasses, and more particularly to what I have termed a loving-cup, the object being to design a cup capable of being used by two persons at the same time drinking in friendship.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved lovingcup. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same with the two cups in position when in use.
Referring to the drawings, A represents an inverted cup or glass, the same being made of metal, glass, china, or of any other desired material, and ornamented or decorated in any suitable manner. From the lower or contracted end of the cup A, extend the arms B, in which is pivoted at b the cup 0, allowed to swing freely between said arms. When not in use, the cup A is used as a base, the article resting upon the outer edge thereof.
In use, the cup C is first filled to the desired eXtent, whereupon the cup A is raised into its proper position for being filled, the cup 0 swinging on its hinges and remaining in its upright position, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 3. The two cups may then be tilted to the proper angle from which to drink, as illustrated in full lines, Fig. 3.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the pivoted cup 0 will always remain in its upright position when swinging freely between the arms B, it being capable of being tilted at any suitable angle from which to drink, regardless of the position of the lower stationary cup A. It will also be understood that the cup C, as well as the cup A, and also the arms B, may be ornamented or decorated as desired, and given any pleasing outline.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A loving cup comprising two drinking cups, one of said cups forming a base upon which the article rests when not in use, the second of said cups being pivoted with relation to the former, whereby both of said cups may be used simultaneously, substantially as described.
2. A loving-cup comprising two drinking cups, one of which is provided at its lower contracted end with arms, the other of said cups being pivoted between said arms and capable of swinging at an angle to the first mentioned cup, substantially as described.
Signed at New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 2nd day of April, A. D. 1908.
ALFRED SCHIGKERLING.
